WATCH: Thieves steal more than $300K in boat equipment
CULLMAN Co., Ala. (WAFF) - At GAF Marine, frustration is mounting for owner Kyle Scheer. His boat shop has been hit twice by thieves who he said have stolen more than $300,000 worth of equipment. Scheer has video surveillance footage of the suspects committing the crime but it isn’t enough evidence to make an arrest.
Hartselle Police arrest man for trying to photograph child using a Walmart bathroom
The Hartselle Police Department arrested a man accused of trying to film a child while the child was using a bathroom at a Walmart in Hartselle. On May 21, according to court documents, the child was using the bathroom when they noticed a man starting to try to either take photos or video them.
2 arrested after dog found shot, burned and dumped
WEST POINT, Ala. – Two Cullman County men were arrested in connection to the alleged shooting and killing of a dog owned by one of the men. The canine’s body was set on fire before being dumped at a separate location, according to local law enforcement. Sportsman Lake Park ‘All Day Fun’ event June 3
CULLMAN, Ala. – This Saturday, June 3, Cullman County Parks and Recreation will host “All Day Fun” at Sportsman Lake Park. Train rides will go until 9 p.m. and paddle boats and bikes will be available for rental until 7. The concession stand will be open until 9 and be serving hamburgers and hotdogs. Armbands, which grant bearers all-day access for the train and putt-putt, can be purchased for $5. Paddle boats and bikes are separate, with normal pricing. Obituary: Glenda Faye Grund
Funeral services for Glenda Faye Grund, 79, of Hanceville, will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2023 at Hanceville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Fairview West Cemetery. Reverend Tony Thomas will be officiating. Visitation for the public will be from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday at Hanceville Funeral Home. Mrs. Grund was born on Aug. 12, 1943 to the late Theodore R. and Nellie (Vincent) Jenkins in Blount County, Alabama. She passed away on June 1, 2023 at her residence in Hanceville. Just to name a few of the many things she enjoyed doing was working on her farm and keeping up her garden every year. She also enjoyed sewing and quilting. In times of reflection; Mrs. Grund loved everything waterfalls. Survivors include her children, A.J. Grund, Cathy Silcox and Donna Dean; grandchildren, Monica Swann, Stacie Shaddrix, Heath Dean and Lindsie Yeager; great-grandchild, Raylee Yeager; sisters, Ollie Tankersley, Shirley Curl and Gail Skillman; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Grund was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Lee Grund; parents; and son-in-law, Tony Silcox.

CULLMAN, Ala. – The ribbon was cut on the grand opening of Smith Lake Ziplines Friday, June 2, with representatives from the Cullman Area Chamber of Commerce, Cullman County Commission and more on-hand to celebrate with owners Craig Chapman and Brian Waldrep. Smith Lake Ziplines, built by American Adventure Park Systems, boasts the longest zipline in the state of Alabama at approximately 3,000 feet. It has an automatic brake system along with two automatic brakes as backup. Texas man killed at Gardendale hotel remembered as ‘kind, honest, hardworking’
A 29-year-old Texas man killed at an Alabama hotel is being remembered as kind, honest and hardworking. Julio Acosta Garcia, 25, was killed in the predawn hours of Memorial Day at the Best Western in Gardendale. Police said his co-worker was arrested in Mississippi but have not yet identified him or announced formal charges.
Concerns of Police Survivors to host picnic at Sportsman Lake June 3
CULLMAN, Ala. – This Saturday, June 3, the Alabama chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) will host its annual picnic at Sportsman Lake Park from 11 a.m.-2:30 p.m. in pavilion no. 1. COPS is a nonprofit organization that “provides resources to assist in the rebuilding of shattered lives of surviving families and others affected.” This picnic is held every year in a different city across the state of Alabama. The chapter will provide lunch along with one park activity for each survivor. The goal of the event is to provide camaraderie and fellowship among survivors. Athens truck driver named Highway Angel after rescuing driver from overturned tanker
A local truck driver being called a hero after he pulled a man out of an overturned tanker. Bradley Edwards of Athens was driving up Interstate 65 near Cullman on May 3 just doing his job. When suddenly, he saw a tanker truck in front of him veer of to the side and flip over.
Clay mayor says grocery tax cut can encourage more shoppers
CLAY, Ala. (WBRC) - Lawmakers passed a bill this week that would cut the state’s grocery tax to 2% by September of 2024. This is just eight months after the Clay City Council passed something similar in their own city. They cut their local grocery tax in half so now community members only pay two cents per dollar rather than four cents towards the municipal portion of the 10 cent grocery tax.

Governor, grants show some ‘Love’ to Good Hope
MONTGOMERY — A pair of grants totaling $500,000 will help create nearly three dozen jobs in Good Hope, Gov. Kay Ivey announced this week. A $250,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission will be combined with a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant awarded earlier by Ivey. The two grants will provide infrastructure for the construction of a Love’s Travel Stop at the Interstate 65 and Cullman County Road 222 interchange.
ATM stolen from Merchant's Bank
May 30—The Cullman Police Department are currently investigating the theft of an ATM from the main branch of Merchants Bank located at 900 2nd Ave. SW. CPD Public Relations Officer Adam Clark said the incident took place sometime during the early morning hours on Monday, May 29. In a text message sent to The Times on Monday, Clark said both the ATM and the suspect vehicle were recovered less than a mile from the bank at the intersection of 1st Ave. SW and Birmingham Street.
