QB to QB matchup: Jake Strong vs Sam Leavitt

Sam Leavitt and Jake Strong are set for Saturday night but LSU should consider Landen Clark to start for this matchup. LSU takes on McNeese this Saturday at 6:45 p.m. in Death Valley, and the Cowboys will NOT be bringing in their third-year QB Devin Lippold to take on the Tigers and Sam Leavitt, and potentially Landen Clark and Husan Longstreet. Lippold is out for the rest of the season with an injury to his right wrist. Jake Strong is taking over for Lippold and started last week against East Texas A&M. Strong finished the game 17-of-27 for 202 yards and 1 TD, with 9 carries for 34 yards. Strong is a 6’2”, 210-pound junior out of Justin, Texas. Out of high school, Strong committed to Texas Tech in the 2023 class and played in 3 games, making one start against BYU. An interesting connection here is that Strong was the third-string QB behind Tyler Shough when he was the starter at Tech. Shough went down with a broken fibula, and backup QB Behren Morton suffered a shoulder injury, which gave Strong his opportunity to start against BYU. In 2024, Strong was redshirted and did not appear in a single game. In 2025, Strong transferred to McNeese and was the starter last year but finished with more INTs than TDs, throwing 11 TDs to 13 INTs. To start this season, Strong was the QB against Stephen F. Austin but hurt his shoulder late in the second quarter. This allowed Lippold to enter the game, and he became the starter going forward until he hurt his wrist against UT Rio Grande Valley. Strong will be a dual-threat QB, and his mobility will be a part of the offense. As the full-time starter, he was third in the Southland Conference in total offense per game. The weather can also have an impact on the play-calling as well. Regardless of the players who will be on the field for LSU, the pass rush will have to account for Strong’s mobility and his willingness to run. He will also put some passes into contested areas, and the Tigers will have to make sure those passes are converted into turnovers.
