GROTON, Conn. (WTNH) — Sixty-thousand vehicles travel over the Gold Star Memorial Bridge daily, and when construction begins along the northbound side of Interstate 95 in the New London-Groton area, drivers will see some significant changes.

The entire deck is scheduled to be replaced, and during construction, there will be a major detour, which could be in place for two to three years.

Airlines now required to give Connecticut passengers automatic refunds for canceled, delayed flights

Two lanes on the northbound span of the bridge will remain open for local traffic between New London and Groton, while two other northbound lanes for traffic continuing on I-95 north beyond exit 85 will be detoured over to the southbound span, accommodating the two-way traffic.

“There will be three lanes of I-95 southbound that are available, and then we’ll have the two I-95 northbound lanes and a barrier that’s bolted through the deck in between to protect,” Tracey Brais, a project engineer with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), said.

DOT officials said the crossover is expected to begin in spring 2026.
