Back in the days when people named Rowland, Rell and Malloy called the governor's mansion home, Democrats had one path to earning that prized lodging: Sweep the cities. The rest of the state? Election maps showed a sea of red with here and there a few cities, suburbs and university enclaves breaking up the Republican landscape.
The 2026 elections are over and a "blue wave" hit Connecticut, similar to much of the country. Gov. Democrats swept the elections in Connecticut Tuesday and the state’s housing crisis was top of mind for voters and candidates alike leading up to, and after, the election. With Democrats in various levels of government winning handily, Gov. Connecticut electoral politics has been dully predictable in recent years. Not since 2006 has a Republican been elected to Congress or a Connecticut constitutional office, including the governorship. The last time the GOP won majority status in the state Senate was 1997, aside from an 18-18 tie in 2016; in the House, 1984. Since the 2018 election, Democrats have enjoyed a trifecta – control of the executive and legislative branches of state government – but Republican nominees continued to win their share of state House and Senate seats.

Advocates for people behind bars in Connecticut say they want swift changes to the state’s prison health care system. An Office of the Correction Ombuds report from earlier this year found nearly 1,600 people in prison awaiting appointments for off-site medical treatment. The latest report showed the office received around 2,000 complaints about the Department of Correction’s health services. Barbara Fair, executive director of the group Stop Solitary CT, said it has been a long-standing problem. "People have waited for years to get specialty services. People reportedly have died waiting for services and many have gone home with so many diseases and chronic illnesses as the result of medical neglect," Fair pointed out. The state has enacted a new law to improve prison healthcare. It takes a multifaceted approach, requiring the state to provide medically necessary procedures at on-site or off-site facilities and to keep electronic health records. It also creates a Correction Medical and Health Commission to draft a 10-year plan to improve medical, nutrition, behavioral health and healthcare services for incarcerated people. Fair's group said other changes are needed, including hiring more healthcare professionals to work for the Department of Corrections. She noted some people have left the

The whole thing started in a school storage closet. An art teacher filled it with treasures from her travels, and the idea simply grew from there.
