Gresham City Council unanimously approved a first-ever climate action plan to reduce greenhouse emissions, protect the environment and create a more resilient community with free access to resources.

The five-year plan was enacted during a meeting Tuesday, April 16.

“After years of development and collaboration with our community, we are pleased to present this plan to Gresham,” said Mayor Travis Stovall. “The Climate Action Plan will serve as our guide as we all work together to ensure Gresham remains a healthy, vibrant and safe place to call home.”

The Climate Action Plan has been in development for the last three years. That has included community workshops, surveys and events to hear input and feedback to shape the plan. The final plan includes:

Increasing community access to energy efficiency and weatherization resources that provide energy cost savings, reductions to emissions, and improvements to indoor health and safety.Increasing community access to emergency response and preparedness information and resources that improve shelter-in-place plans during extreme weather.Supporting the maintenance and improvement of tree canopy in neighborhoods that are vulnerable to urban heat islands.

The city’s Department of Environmental Services is attempting to secure grant funding to distribute resources at no cost to the community, as well as putting together educational workshops.

The foundation for this work was laid in 2009 with the enactment of the city’s first Sustainability Policy, and continued in 2011 with Gresham’s Internal Operations and Facilities Sustainability Plan.
