A science squad from Barlow will travel to an international competition as part of Team Oregon.

The Bruins team of Bryson Lindley, North Nadeau and Keely Rezvani, advised by Neal Bridgnell, made it through the Northwest Science Expo, the state competition, earlier this month at Portland State University with a project investigating the effects of temperature on oil spill bioremediation.

That showing earned a spot among 30 other students from Oregon that are heading south to participate in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, which will take place from May 11-17 in Los Angeles.

Several other teams from the Gresham-Barlow School District competed in the Northwest Science Expo. From Gresham High was a team of Ben Graham, Jack Dillon, and Luong Nguyen, advised by Cyrus Harshfield, with a project investigating the effects of acids on steel wool.

This year also featured projects from middle schools. Duke Vazquez, Sky Sanchez and Charles Martin, from Clear Creek Middle School, advised by Bill Dudeiros, presented projects at the fair.

The Barlow students heading to the international competition will join the world’s largest pre-college science competition, with more than 1800 students from 75 countries. Also joining Team Oregon are Liam Aranda-Michel from Lake Oswego High School and Shriya Pai from Jesuit High School.

The finalists will participate in a variety of activities as they prepare for the final competition. They will compete for nearly $9 million in awards, prizes and scholarships.
