Restaurants return oyster shells to restore Coastal Bend reefs
When diners want a taste of the sea, they order the oysters, perhaps served in their own shells. The diner might not realize that the removal of shells when oysters are being harvested can disrupt the coastal ecosystem. They might not know that there's any option other than tossing the shells in with the trash headed to the landfill. But now that a Coastal Bend conservation initiative has expanded, oyster shells from partnering San Antonio restaurants are now being diverted back into Texas bays to restore oyster reefs. For years, the Sink Your Shucks Oyster Shell Recycling Program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's Harte Research Institute has collected shells from local Corpus Christi restaurants. Community volunteers of all ages have helped the Sink Your Shucks team restore oyster reefs in St. Charles Bay near Goose Island State Park. The initiative has returned millions of pounds of shell to waters in the Mission-Aransas Estuary, including in Copano, Aransas and St. Charles bays. In June, volunteers also added a reef just off Mustang Island in the Upper Laguna Madre. Last week, Sink Your Sucks announced a new partnership with the South Texas Coastal Initiative to create a pathway to collect oyster shells

Dancers call for release of leader Adalberto Zanes from ICE custody
The Mexica dancers in Carroll Lane Park spun through the heat for more than two hours on Sept. 13, praying for a mentor who was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Adalberto Zanes, who has lived in the U.S. for 32 years, was detained about a month ago, his friends and supporters shared during the event. "Adalberto has been in a detention center for over a month now," friend Melissa Zamora said. "He was taken into ICE custody on his way to work, blocked in by ICE vehicles. He was pulled out of his car and into the street all while he was just trying to get to work." Zanes founded the Kalpulli Ehekatl Papalotizin, which means Venerable Butterfly of the Wind, in Corpus Christi in 2011. The group has performed at events in Corpus Christi. On Sept. 13, the group was joined by dancers from across Texas in a series of danzas, which were prayers for Zanes, who mentored many. Zanes faces a court hearing Sept. 14 at Port Isabel Detention Center. Attendees at the Sept. 13 event shared their love and respect for Zanes, with some writing letters of support. Large-scale El Bolillo Bakery could make a home in Corpus Christi
A large-scale bakery offering a variety of traditional Mexican fare could move into an abandoned Walgreens on Corpus Christi’s Westside. Known under an economic development “code name” as Project Concha, El Bolillo Bakery touts pan dulce, pan de muerto, rosca de reyes, cuerno de queso, panaderos — and, fittingly, conchas and bolillos — among others, city documents show. The company mass-manufactures baked goods for grocery stores, restaurants and wholesalers, and also provides individual sales such as custom-made cakes, according to a presentation made before the Type B board on Sept. 10. The presentation was part of a pitch requesting $363,000 in tax incentives to open up shop. Clearance from the Type B board represents among the first steps in brokering economic development agreements backed with sales taxes. Should the project move forward as planned, it would represent expansion of the family franchise, joining an existing five locations in Houston, according to the presentation. The proposed agreement calls for creation of about 121 new jobs bolstering a $3.6 million yearly payroll, documents show. There are also opportunities such as providing student internships, said company representative Catherine Nash, addressing the board Sept. 10. “Like any manufacturing organization that moves into a community,
