Four area teams remain in the top five of the weekly Kpreps.com rankings, heading into the second round of the playoffs. The area teams who were in the top five of their classifications remained in the same spot. Holcomb is at No. 3 in Class 3A, Wichita County is No. 3 in 8-Man, Division I, Hodgeman County remains at No. 4 in 8-Man, Division II, while Ingalls remained No. 3 in 6-Man. Several area schools remained in consideration for the top five.

Republicans needed to win Sedgwick County to avoid a blue wave. That didn't happen

Kansas Republicans had pinned their hopes of avoiding a blue wave on Sedgwick County, the unofficial home base for the GOP’s top-of-the-ticket candidates Roger Marshall and Ty Masterson. Donald Trump won Sedgwick County by more than 30,000 votes in 2024. Last month, he visited Park City and encouraged voters to pretend he was on the ballot when voting for Republican candidates. Sedgwick County did not abide. Instead, it voted for Democratic candidates in major races down the ticket, a stark change for a usually red-leaning county. Masterson's bid to catch Holscher hinges on ballots he wanted scrapped | Opinion

As regular readers of my column know, I have quite the appetite for irony. And irony doesn’t get any more delicious than when someone tampers with voting rules to try to gain a partisan advantage, gets overruled in court, and then the original rule turns out to be their last, best hope for political survival. Enter Senate President Ty Masterson, stage right. As of this moment, Masterson, the Republican candidate for governor, trails his Democratic opponent Sen. Cindy Holscher by a paltry 5,578 votes out of more than 1.1 million cast. The only plausible scenario in which Masterson can overtake Holscher is if late-delivered mail votes break his way. The irony here is that if Masterson had had his way, those votes he now needs would have ended up in dumpsters behind election offices across the state, uncounted, unrecorded and unceremoniously forgotten. A little background: In 2017 the Legislature, by a bipartisan and near-unanimous vote, passed a bill allowing ballots to be counted if they’re postmarked by Election Day and delivered to the election office by the Friday after the election. At the time, it was seen mostly as an accommodation to voters in sparsely populated rural sections of Kansas,

Few showers Thursday before a dry weekend

As expected, some showers have moved into Southwest Kansas during the night. There have been some embedded heavier showers. This cluster of rain will crawl east through the rest of the morning and into the afternoon. Moisture will continue to favor southern portions of the area. Once we get into the evening, we will begin to dry out as rain tracks to our south and east.
