A Havelock man who the Greenville Police Department said fled the country to avoid a rape charge was located by federal agents in Puerto Rico and will be extradited to Pitt County.

Special agents in the FBI’s San Juan Field Office arrested Deshawn Keon Oliver, 29, on May 8 in Aguidilla, Puerto Rico. He was accused of hiding from police on a 2021 charge of statutory rape. DNA evidence indicated he impregnated a 13-year-old girl with whom he had regular contact, the department said.

Oliver initially attempted to elude arrest and was located in Glasgow, Kentucky, in February 2022. A judge placed him on electronic monitoring, but investigators became aware that he removed the device in late December 2023. Greenville police and State Bureau of Investigation investigators were informed that he was hiding in Puerto Rico.

Federal warrants were obtained through the police department, FBI Charlotte Field Office and United States Attorney’s Office that charged Oliver with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution for his attempt to hide in Puerto Rico. He will be extradited to Pitt County to face the rape charge.
