A Greenville man was sentenced to a maximum of nearly 10 years in prison after jury found him guilty of charges in a wreck that killed a Macon woman and injured two others.

Brandon Creighton, 38, of 2204 Jefferson Drive was sentenced to 80-118 months in prison on April 19, the Pitt County District Attorney’s Office said. The case took place in Pitt County Superior Court. Judge Marvin Blount oversaw the proceedings and handled the sentencing.

Creighton was convicted of felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving to endanger and failure to maintain lane control, the DA’s office said.

The wreck occurred about noon on April 17, 2023, when Creighton was driving his vehicle north on U.S. 264 near Old Pactolus Road near Parker’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

The State Highway Patrol said he was travelling at approximately 80 mph when he attempted to change lanes and struck a pickup truck to his left.

Patrol Sgt. B.A. Taylor said at the time that the two vehicles crossed into the median, struck a tree, a metal traffic light and started overturning in the sound-bound lanes.

The pickup truck struck an oncoming car head-on while overturning. Deloris Thompson Pierce of Macon, a passenger in the car, was killed, Taylor said.

Creighton’s vehicle, an SUV, and the car came to rest in the roadway, and the pickup came to rest off the road on the church’s property. The pickup was upside down and the SUV was on its side.

The driver of the car carrying Pierce suffered serious injuries as well as the pickup driver. They were transported to ECU Health Medical Center.

Four state troopers testified during Creighton’s trial.

Creighton has a prior conviction for driving while impaired from a June 25, 2013, incident.
