GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Junior League of Greenville’s Little Black Dress Initiative, a week-long social media campaign raising awareness around Pitt County food insecurity, kicked off Monday.

The Junior League told 9OYS that participants are asked to wear the same black dress five days in a row to be a conversation starter and as a way to address food insecurity in the area. Officials with the Junior League said 1 in 6 Pitt County residents face food insecurity.

“We’re really trying to call attention to ourselves of wearing the dresses and we wear the buttons because we want to start conversations with people and share about food insecurity,” Junior League Fund Development Vice President Chandler Whitley said.

The Junior League said there are multiple ways to show support. adding people can participate to wear a black dress to spread awareness, buy a shirt to support the Little Black Dress Initiative Fundraiser, donate online or via mail or attend the wrap-up party for the campaign.

The Little Black Dress Initiative wrap-up party is scheduled for this Friday from 5-8 p.m. at Pitt Street Brewing Company. There will be raffle prizes and a food truck.

People can also support the initiative by purchasing a “This Shirt Feeds Our Neighbors” T-shirt at Pitt Street Brewing Company for $25. Whitley said the money raised will help the Junior League support local food efforts.

“We’re raising all this money so when someone says, ‘Help, we need a fridge,’ or ‘Help, we need this project,’ we want to be able to get in there and help during those times of need,” Whitley said.
