Suamico Paddle builds connections through kayaking and paddling
With the recent warmer temperatures, Jessica Cook and Bryan Schwebke, owners of Suamico Paddle , are seeing an upsurge in customers making reservations to get out on the water. Schwebke, who started the business with Stephen Scripp in 2020, was looking for another partner after Scripp left to pursue other ventures. That’s when Jessica Cook happened to stop in at his physical therapy practice, Paramount Physical Therapy and Training in Suamico. A dedicated runner, Cook was struggling with an injury. “I was having some knee issues and he was doing some of the therapy,” Cook said. “Our families became friends and we started talking about his interest in having a new partner in the business. I’m a teacher so we are off in the summer and that is the busiest time for Suamico Paddle so we sat down and made a plan to have me join him in the business.” Cook’s husband, Adam, offered his support as details were finalized. Having operated a childcare business during the pandemic, she already had business experience to bring to the new venture. She said, “The childcare center was a short-term plan to help out teacher families when they needed to be at school.

Housing projects get approvals amid resident critiques
A proposed housing project in Sturgeon Bay took another step forward Tuesday, but not without criticism from some of its future neighbors. The Sturgeon Bay Common Council approved the rezoning of property on Division Road from Agricultural (A) to Two-Family Residential (R-3) and the creation of a planned unit development (PUD) classification. While a related agenda item — a development agreement with DOCO Iron Gate LLC — was tabled for a future meeting, the action does move a proposed 55-lot subdivision featuring a mix of single-family homes and duplexes, along with a condominium development featuring 34 storage units with optional living space, closer to reality.
