Investigation into Carlinville funeral home underway after highly decomposed bodies found, wrongful cremated remains given to families
CARLINVILLE, Ill. (WAND) - The Sangamon County Coroner and the Sangamon County Sheriff have opened an investigation into the practices of Heinz Funeral Home/Family Care Cremations in Carlinville. Coroner Jim Allmon said, "There have been numerous incidents regarding the identification and treatment of human remains by the above-mentioned funeral home."
Shipman trustee charged with 15 felonies
A Shipman village trustee is charged with 15 felony counts, accused of misusing village funds for personal gain when she served as the village's treasurer. 45-year-old Elizabeth Robinson is charged with two Class 1 counts of felony theft, one Class 2 count of felony theft, one count of felony forgery, one count of felony wire fraud, and 10 counts of felony official misconduct.
Grafton getting into the Halloween spirit
The annual Witches on the Water event will be held in Grafton on Saturday, October 21st, and the proceeds from the event will be donated to a project being overseen by the city council there. The Grafton Veteran’s Memorial Project is a work in progress, and Mayor Mike Morrow tells The Big Z the witches will come out in big numbers to support the effort.

Grafton Emergency Preparedness Training
Grafton Mayor Mike Morrow, Mayor’s Assistant Justin Cote and Grafton Police Chief Eric Spanton met with Jerseyville Fire Chief Keith Norman, Director Jersey County EMA, to discuss emergency response coordination. Last November, the City of Grafton underwent a tabletop flood exercise with the County and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency ( IEMA ). To build on the lessons learned from last year’s exercise, this year’s training has been focusing on Command, Control and Coordination of materials, volunteers, and programs.
Saginaw-area fall sports highlights: Carrollton wins volleyball showdown with Millington
In a battle between two of the top teams in the Tri-Valley Conference, Carrollton had just enough to get past Millington. After Millington won the first set, 24-26, Carrollton came back to claim 25-20 and 25-18 wins before Millington sent the match to a fifth set with a 25-12 win. In the final set, Carrollton claimed a 17-15 win for the 3-2 victory.
Lincoln Playoff Eligible for First Time in 40 Years After Win Over Jacksonville
The Lincoln Railsplitters defeated the Jacksonville Crimsons 41-28 to earn their 5th win and playoff eligibility. Lincoln has not made the playoffs since the 1984 season. Ki’on Carson scored 3 total touchdowns and Darren Stevens threw for 3 scores in the win. Cam’Ron Mitchell also ran for 3 Crimson touchdowns.

Broom Orchard holds 41st annual Apple Festival
Last weekend, Broom Apple Orchard celebrated 41 years of tradition at its annual Apple Fesitval. As usual, a large turnout was attracted. “This has been an asset to the community because we draw a crowd from all over central Illinois,” Lisa Broom said. “They come to Carlinville to visit the orchard, but then get to see our beautiful community with all its shops, restaurants, and other points of interest that bring business to the town. Our goal has always been that families could come and enjoy the beauty of an orchard without having to pay extra for their experience.”
