Manassas Ballet show to feature ‘Les Sylphides'
The Manassas Ballet Theatre will stage a mixed program March 13-15 featuring "Les Sylphides" and several new works at the Hylton Performing Arts Center. The program will open with a collection of neoclassical pieces, including a pas de deux from "Le Corsaire." Two company dancers are contributing new choreography: Désirée Rondeau, making her first choreographic debut with the ballet, and Hallie Wilde, returning after presenting work last season. Rondeau said her piece, set to music by Camille Saint-Saëns, is intended to highlight male dancers' "athleticism, stamina, strength, musicality and sharp footwork," with one female role providing what she described as "a touch of softness." Wilde, choreographing to a section of Symphony No. 7 by Antonín Dvořák, said she aimed to reflect the music's varied dynamics and create movement that "showcases a diverse range" of the dancers' abilities. The second act will feature "Les Sylphides," a seminal early-20th-century ballet set to the music of Frédéric Chopin. The plotless work centers on a poet encountering ethereal sylphs in a woodland setting, a piece long noted for its emphasis on atmosphere and lyricism.
