Readers crown Phoenix Mexican restaurant Top Taco 2026. 'It's heaven'

In the last few weeks, Taco Chelo has swept nearly every taco award in Phoenix, from all four categories at Taco Fest to its latest accolade, the title of Top Taco champ in The Republic's fourth annual Top Taco readers' choice contest. "To get this kind of recognition twice in a month, it's heaven," said co-owner Gennaro Garcia. Taco Chelo first opened in Phoenix in 2018. To have such a sudden, unprecedented burst in popularity in its eighth year is almost unheard of, especially for a restaurant that relies mostly on "boca en boca" or word-of-mouth advertising. Garcia attributes their recent success, in part, to a brand-new approach to tortillas that they adopted just three months ago. A fated collaboration Taco Chelo has three co-owners: Garcia, an acclaimed artist in both the U.S. and Mexico; experienced restaurateur Aaron Chamberlin; and Mexican chef Suny Santana. Garcia grew up very active in his family's restaurants in Mexico. The concept of Taco Chelo was an idea in his head for a long time, but he wasn't ready to do it alone because he said he was "not a chef."
