Mental health fair for communities of color returns to Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A mental health fair that’s all about supplying resources to communities of color is returning to Grand Rapids.

Hosted by local nonprofit Our Mental Health Collective, the fair is back for its second year.

“Our goal is to provide culturally responsive and affirming mental health care resources to BIPOC communities, and BIPOC meaning Black, Indigenous and communities of color,” said Rebecca Spann, the founder of the nonprofit.

The event will include music, food trucks, raffles, yoga, face painting and more.

“We wanted to make sure it was a family-focused event,” Spann said. “And so this year, they can expect to have some activities for their children but also receive some information for themselves.”

Organizers say they want to offer resources, raise awareness and improve representation in mental health.

The fair will take place Saturday, May 4 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Paul I. Phillips Boys and Girls Club of Grand Rapids, located at 726 Madison Ave. SE near Martin Luther King Jr. Street SE. You can learn more about the BIPOC Mental Health Fair here.
