13-year-old dead in Grand Isle drowning

A New Orleans teen is dead after police say he drowned while swimming at a Grand Isle beach.

Our partners at WWL-TV report that the incident happened around 3 p.m. behind the Bridge Side Marina.

According to Police Chief Walter Theriot, the teen was visiting Grand Isle with his family from Algiers. Theriot said the teen went under water near a rock jetty while conditions were rough and dangerous. Theriot also said the teen's family told investigators that the teen could hardly swim.

Family members tried to rescue the teen, but their efforts were futile.

Published reports say the teen’s body washed ashore on Sunday.

Initial reports said the teen's father also drowned. However, Theriot later said that was not the case.
