Jeffers staff awarded letters of merit by SL Fire Chief

At the Spring Lake fire station on Tuesday afternoon, Fire Chief John Stalzer presented letters of merit to staff members from Jeffers Elementary School for their quick response to a student’s medical emergency that occurred last month.

Nine individuals – Alec Lininger, Maddy Nogar, Jamie Maxson, Abby Holstrom, Dawn Schmidt, Shelly Peets, Nikki Thuene, Heidi Ryan and Lisa Mastenbrook – were recognized by the Spring Lake Fire Department for their teamwork while either directly or indirectly assisting first grade student Tinley Baranowski when she went into cardiac arrest shortly after entering the school building on the morning of March 11. The staff’s quick response to Tinley’s collapse and Lininger’s use of a nearby Automated External Defibrillator (AED) allowed for the student to be conscious and given advance treatment by first responders within minutes of her experiencing cardiac arrest.
