Perry Baseball Bats Explode in 10-3 Win Friday Night
The Perry offense finally got going Friday night as the Bluejays defeated Greene County 10-3 in Heart of Iowa action. Perry finished with a season high 13 hits. Fausto Beato and Owen Myers led the charge with three hits each. Beato delivered a pair of RBI doubles and finished with 3 RBI’s. Geren Kenney added two hits including a two-run double in the fifth. Myers pitched the complete game allowing five hits and striking out 6 Ram batters. The win was Perry’s first against Greene County since the 2017 season.
HOIAC All-Conference Soccer Rams
The high school soccer girls and boys State tournaments ended last week and the Heart of Iowa Activities Conference All-Conference selections are now released. The league had three teams, including Greene County, play in the boys’ State tournament, as well as Perry and Nevada. Nevada also had its girls’ team qualify for State.

Fort Dodge native off to hot start at PCC
DES MOINES, Iowa — The usual big names are atop the leaderboard after Round 1 of the Principal Charity Classic. A fan favorite from Iowa is not far behind. Fort Dodge native Judd Gibb, a member of the Iowa Golf Hall of Fame, shot a -2 and is six strokes behind leader Steve Stricker. Not bad for his first Champion's Tour event.
Rams teams home tonight vs. Cubs
It’s Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball and baseball vs. Nevada in Jefferson tonight for the Greene County teams. The varsity baseball game will be broadcast on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com from Allensworth Field. Coverage is set to begin shortly after 7 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. This is the first meeting of the two conference contests with the return trips to Nevada scheduled for later this month. Nevada softball is 1-6 overall and 1-4 in the conference while Nevada baseball is 2-5, 1-4 while the Rams are 6-4, 4-1 in softball and 1-7, 0-4 in baseball.
Petersen 8th in Under 20 World Team Trials
Kale Petersen, a recent Greene County High School graduate, placed eighth at 61 kilograms on Saturday at the Under 20 World Team Trials Freestyle Wrestling Tournament at Spire Institute in Kettering, Ohio. Petersen lost in the quarterfinals, dropping into the consolation part of the bracket and eventually finishing eighth. The U. of Iowa recruit won three Iowa high school State titles, including in 2022 and ’23 for the Greene County Rams. He wrestles for Sebolt Wrestling Academy of Jefferson.
Keith Vander Wilt Memorial Golf Tournament Raises $2,300 for High School Golf Program
A first-ever golf tournament to honor a beloved educator and golf coach from Jefferson was recently held. The Keith Vander Wilt Memorial Golf Tournament happened on May 27th at the Jefferson Municipal Golf Course. A total of $2,300 was raised to help the Greene County High School golf teams to purchase golf bags, indoor nets and other equipment for players. There were a total of 64 players that made up 16 teams and one of the high school coaches, Kyle Kinne says they enjoyed the day and felt this was a great way to honor the memory of Vander Wilt, who dedicated his life to teaching in the classroom and coaching kids on the golf course who passed away last August. He adds Keith’s wife Beth and the family also enjoyed being there.
Saturday tournament results for Greene County baseball and softball
Baseball and softball teams from Greene County High School played in tournaments yesterday. Softball was at Bondurant-Farrar and baseball played in Boone. Coach Tom Kennedy’s softball Rams went 0-2 on the day vs Mason City Newman and the host B-F Blue Jays. Newman is ranked number 9 in Class 1A by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and the Knights were 5-1 winners vs. the Rams, the eleventh straight victory to begin 2023. The loss was the third in nine games for Greene County.and the record on the season dropped to to 6-4 with a 10-0 loss to B-F. Greene County was outscored 15-1 in the two games combined.
Greene Co Esports Stands Alone as State Champions
There’s a new state champion on top of the Iowa High School Esports mountain and it’s in the form of a Ram. The Greene County High School Esports Spring Smite Team won the Iowa High School Esports Association State Playoffs on Thursday. The Rams entered the top eight team tournament with a 6-1 record. In the best of three match rounds, Greene County swept West Delaware in the opening round, beat Roland-Story, who was last year’s state champion and the Rams only regular season loss, 2-1; and then took down Iowa Falls-Alden in the championship match 2-0.
A sports public relations legend to receive the 2023 Bell Tower of Fame Award
She’s been called a “legend of NBA communication” and now the 1977 Jefferson High School graduate will be honored as the 2023 Bell Tower of Fame Award recipient. The award recognizes a person who has lived in Greene County sometime in their life whose professional or personal accomplishments internationally, nationally or statewide bring great pride to Greene County.
Two Youth Basketball Camps Coming Up with Jefferson Parks and Rec
There are a couple of basketball camps coming up with the Jefferson Parks and Recreation Department. A boys basketball camp will take place June 5th-7th from 11am-noon for first through sixth graders. A girls basketball camp will be from June 12th-14th with two age sessions, including kindergarten through third grade from 1-2pm and fourth through sixth grade from 2-3pm.

Marine Corps Capt. Benjamin Biedryzcki presented the Battles Won Comeback Award to Taylor McCreedy, a track and field student-athlete with Iowa Central Community College, for her resiliency and fighting spirit.
Girls track & field awards for Greene Co. told
Greene County High School girls’ head track & field coach Derek Merk has released award winners for the recently completed season. The Rams placed in three events at the Class 2A portion of the Iowa State Coed Championships last month at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Senior Natalie Heupel was seventh in the 400 meter dash, and the 4 x 200 meter relay was seventh with Olivia Shannon, Katrina Heupel, Natalie Heupel,, and Kamryn Sanders. All are seniors. The 4 x 400 meter relay was sixth with freshman Kaycee Pittman, the Heupel twins, and Shannon.
Too wet in Rippey; Greene County hosts Perry in Jefferson for both baseball and softball
The Greene County baseball and softball teams face Perry tonight in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play and now all the action will be in Jefferson. The baseball JV/varsity games were to have been at Walt Anderson Field in Rippey, but wet conditions prompted officials this morning to move the games to Allensworth Field east of the Middle School. Shawn Kenney will have the baseball broadcast on 1310 AM KDLS, and the softball will be on KGRA 98.9 FM from the City Diamond on E. Lincolnway in Jefferson with Doug Rieder on the call. Both varsity games are scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
West Marshall tops baseball Rams
Greene County fell to 0-3 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball with a 10-0 loss on Wednesday night to West Marshall in State Center via the 10-run rule in 4-1/2 innings. Overall, Coach Kyle Stalder’s Rams are 1-4 while the Trojans improved to 4-0 in the conference and 9-2 overall.

Ram softball wins at WM on Wednesday
Greene County faced West Marshall in State Center on Wednesday night in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference softball and the Rams won 3-0 to improve to 3-1 in the conference and 5-2 overall. The Rams broke a scoreless tie by scoring all three runs were scored in the sixth inning. The shut out was the third of the season. The Trojans fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Ram softball team goes 4-2 on the week, now at
The Greene County softball team started their season last week with six games, picking up four wins and two losses. On Monday, May 22, the Rams traveled to Roland-Story High School where they won their first game 3-0. Two hits came off the bats of Olivia Shannon and Alexa Peters, with nine hits total from the Rams. Catcher Emma Stream had 13 putouts, with the team having 21 putouts and no errors. Emma Hoyle was on the mound, throwing 79 pitches. She allowed three hits with 12 strikeouts.
Greene Co Esports Sets Sights on State Championship
In its second year, the Greene County High School Esports Team is going back to the postseason tomorrow in Des Moines. Kyle Kinne is one of the coaches and says the spring season the team competed in the fantasy team-oriented Smite computer video game and is entering the playoffs with a 6-1 record. He recalls the match the students had earlier in the season when they were 3-0 that propelled them to where they are now.
