What type of housing do we need?
In a recent Carpinteria City Council meeting, there was discussion of a proposal to convert a vacant office complex into 31 residential units, with every one of those units having market-rate rent. It was an interesting concept, but in a moment that is emblematic of one of the biggest planning issues this city faces, a city council member stated, “We’ve got an empty building sitting there, and we need housing. A Quiet Kind of Rare: Bonnymede’s Largest Floor Plan
At Bonnymede, where units tend to share walls and floor plans, 1300 Plaza Pacifica breaks the pattern—a configuration so rare within the community that only a handful were ever built. It is, without exaggeration, the largest layout the community has to offer—three bedrooms, three baths, single-level living throughout, and a rare kind of quiet that comes from having no one pressing in from either side.

Owner of historic ranch near Santa Paula faces lawsuit, bankruptcy
One of Ventura County’s biggest agricultural landowners is bankrupt and facing a civil prosecution accusing the family of illegally altering streams, building unpermitted dams and ponds and otherwise harming the natural environment in a canyon west of Santa Paula. The Guzman family owns Hampton Canyon Ranch, an 1,800-acre cattle property on Wheeler Canyon Road, in the hills between Ventura and Santa Paula. In May, the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office filed suit against the Guzmans and their company, Santa Paula Hay & Grain and Ranches, alleging violations of the California Fish and Game code at Hampton Canyon Ranch and other properties nearby. The lawsuit accuses the Guzmans of changing and obstructing the course of streams on their properties, building dams and a reservoir, grading and altering stream channels, removing vegetation and placing fill and other materials in and around the waterways, all without the proper permits. Those changes can impact wildlife habitat and increase the risk of floods, mudslides and wildfires, Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko told The Star. "These are unprecedented and profound violations that I have not seen in my five and a half years as the district attorney," he said. "We’re talking about more than 1,700
