New Rancho Cantina Reno restaurant to serve ‘vaquero’ food, cocktails
A new restaurant inspired by “vaquero” or cow herder cuisine is gearing up to open this spring in one of Reno’s oldest neighborhoods. Kevin Christiansen is bringing his family’s cantina concept from California to Northern Nevada, with plans to open the new Rancho Cantina Reno restaurant at 700 Riverside Drive. “My family has been involved with Rancho Cantina in Lafayette, California,” Christiansen told the Reno Gazette Journal. “I’m now bringing that family-rooted concept to Reno — a city we’re proud to call home.” Grilled food will figure heavily in the Rancho Cantina Reno’s menu, which will be a nod to the rustic Mexican food made by Californios and cow herders in the early American West. To get the signature char and flavor such cuisine is known for, the restaurant will be using an open-fire grill called a “parilla." The menu will include cuisine with Spanish, Mexican and California influences, such as carne asada, brick chicken and fresh seafood, Christiansen said. In addition to grilled meats and vegetables, Rancho Cantina Reno will also feature a full bar. Drinks will include handcrafted cocktails such as margaritas, premium tequilas and mezcal. The restaurant will serve brunch as well. A tenant improvement permit was
