Brotherly love: Janezich siblings help lead Hibbing harriers to state

HIBBING—What’s better than having one Janezich on a team? The answer to that is two. Brady and Charlie Janezich have been the top-two runners on the Hibbing High School boys cross country team this season, along with Ryan Norenberg, Connor Sullivan, Daxton Cary, Laine Murden and Samuel Bottoms. Those seven runners will take their their talents to the State Class AA Meet, which begins Saturday at 3:15 p.m., at the Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. Brady, a senior, and Charlie, a sophomore, have been the Bluejackets top runners this season and who finished in front alternated all season long as the brothers fought to improve their times. That success doesn’t come by accident. “The big thing is the amount of work they put in during the offseason to get to this point, especially our lead pack of runners,” Hibbing coach James Plese said. “That’s contagious. “Brady really went all in on running. It’s been super fun to watch him develop as a runner. Vidmar steps into an unfamiliar role and earns trip to state

HIBBING—When Avery Kukowski went down with an injury, was Ava Vidmar ready for a change of responsibility? The answer was a resounding, ‘Yes.’ The Hibbing High School sophomore went from being the Bluejackets No. 2 runner to the No. 1 runner, and she responded well in her new role. Vidmar placed sixth overall at the Section 7AA Meet last week, and will now particpate in the State Class AA Meet, which begins Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. As for as Hibbing coach James Plese is concerned, Vidmar exceeded his expectations. “The only reason I can say that is that Ava has been pretty consistent this season as our No. 2 runner,” Plese said. “It has been a rollercoaster as to whether people are injured, battling through different issues or some plateaus that we hit. “If it wasn’t Avery, we weren’t sure where the girls were going to be. We knew that Ava was our next best, but we knew it was a long shot. She exceeded expectations.” Kukowski tried to give it a go at sections, but she hadn’t run for three weeks. Depth running sent Hibbing harriers to state

Bluejacket coach James Plese couldn’t be more proud of how all his runners stepped up to get the team to state. “Ryan was a big part of that,” Plese said. “He had a bad taste in his mouth last year, getting hurt and missing out on the team all together. “He was our consistent No. 3 all year. He stepped up for another injured kid (Sam Baumgardner), who set the tone training-wise. Those four guys (Brady, Charlie, Ryan and Sam) set the tone and expectations for the rest of the guys.” Finally healthy, Norenberg, is making up for lost time. PathBlazers gets ready for snowmobile season

CHISHOLM—In a little less than a month, snowmobile trails are set to open, weather permitting. “December 1 is the official opening and March 31 is the official closing date, per the Minnesota DNR,” Dan Marich, President and Trail Administrator for the PathBlazers Snowmobile Club said in an interview last week. “Let’s pray for snow,” Marich said. “Forecasters are talking Super El Nino, which is concerning—it traditionally brings warmer weather and less snow.” There is still hope for a major snowfall. Marich recalled the Halloween Blizzard of 1991 took place in a Super El Nino year. “So, it can still happen,” he said. “We hope we get decent snow and the trails are ready to go.” Volunteers from the Pathblazers have been hard at work in the off-season to improve trails and make them safer, getting them ready for the much anticipated riding season. “We’ve been doing trail work, brushing, clearing trees that may have fallen over during the summer months,” Marich said. HIBBING—The incumbent mayor of Hibbing, Pete Hyduke, was re-elected for another four-year term on Tuesday, defeating challenger Marisa Allen.
