Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener returns to Grand Rapids
GRAND RAPIDS—With about 400,000 hunters expected in the woods this weekend, state conservation officials, tourism leaders and hunting groups gathered in Grand Rapids on Thursday for the annual Governor’s Deer Hunting Opener, held ahead of Saturday’s start of firearms deer season. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and Explore Minnesota hosted a listening session at Timberlake Lodge with invited conservation organizations, Tribal partners and local businesses, followed by media interviews. A public Deer Opener Pint Night at Rapids Brewing Company, hosted by Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association and the Minnesota Wildlife Federation, capped the evening. Gov. Tim Walz was unable to attend because of schedule conflicts, according to a later DNR statement. In a statement released ahead of the event, he encouraged hunters to buy licenses through the state’s new electronic licensing system. “Deer opener is one of Minnesota’s great traditions,” Walz said. “There’s nothing more Minnesotan than spending time with family and friends in the woods, breathing in the crisp autumn air, and enjoying the outdoors together.” DNR Commissioner Sarah Strommen said the gathering was a chance to reaffirm shared conservation goals. “We’re thrilled to join conservation partners and community members in Grand Rapids to
