The Coosa River already is a popular recreation destination for both locals and visitors during the summer months, and the City of Gadsden has added a new option for fun on the water for Memorial Day weekend.

Four pedal boats are available for rental at the Coosa Landing bait shop, according to a news release from the city, and will be offered throughout the summer months.

Each is designed with a unique animal motif, according to the release: two swans, a duck and a dragon.

The boats can accommodate five riders: two pedalers up front, three on a fully enclosed rear seat.

Life jackets are required; a limited number will be available at the bait shop.

“We are excited to offer families and friends something fun and safe to do together this summer while enjoying the great outdoors in Gadsden," Mayor Craig Ford said. "I am looking forward to seeing all the pictures of the purple dragon, duck and swans full of people going up and down the river. It should be a lot of fun.”

The rental fee is $20 for an hour; the boats also can be rented for longer periods, according to the release, and the fee drops to $15 an hour after the initial 60 minutes.

Renters must be at least 18; an ID is required.

Rentals begin at 9 a.m.; the last rental of the day will be at 5 p.m. (It's 4 p.m. on May 25, opening day.)
