With the Alabama high school soccer scene entering the midway point of the season, the Gadsden Times will begin a weekly ranking of the top boys and girls teams in the area.

Each week, the Gadsden Times will rank the top five teams in the area, which is one of the strongest in the state with some of the top teams in Class 5A — Southside and Guntersville and strong Gadsden City squads in Class 6A.

Here's the top-5 teams, regardless of class in the Gadsden area, for results through March 2:

Gadsden Times boys soccer top 5

1. Southside (17-1-1)

Why: The coaches think they are the top team in Class 5A and after a win over Mountain Brook last week, they might be right. With Camren Thompson (39 goals) at the helm, this attack is lethal at times.

2. Guntersville (16-1-1)

Why: Even the coaches have been flipping them and Southside all year, a potential Final Four matchup would be an exciting game to watch between these two.

3. Gadsden City (15-2-1)

Why: The Titans have been rolling through their schedule, especially as of late with no losses in the month of March. Their last loss was in the Etowah County tournament back on Feb. 24.

4. Susan Moore (13-2)

Why: The Bulldogs have been the class of Class 1A-3A so far this season, but now it's time to shine with the postseason approaching.

5. Westbrook Christian (8-9-1)

Why: The Warriors wrapped up their area before spring break and can already look ahead to the postseason.

Other teams considered: Boaz, Collinsville, Glencoe

Gadsden Times girls soccer top 5

1. Guntersville (15-3-1)

Why: The Wildcats are on a six game unbeaten streak, with plenty of top wins and wins against other teams in these rankings, giving them the top spot.

2. Southside (14-4)

Why: After two losses to begin the year, Southside rolled off 11 wins before a 1-2 stretch at a spring break tournament. Watch out for this attack with Kinsey Carter (18 goals, 14 assists) at the helm

3. Jacksonville (9-2-1)

Why: The Golden Eagles have gotten off to a strong start this season and haven't looked back. They came into spring break on a five game win streak.

4. Gadsden City (7-4-2)

Why: The Titans, Warriors and Collinsville were close but head to head favors the Titans, and they do have better wins outside of those matchups.

5. Westbrook Christian (4-4-1)

Why: The Warriors, like their boys counterpart, wrapped up their area before spring break and can already look ahead to the postseason.

Other teams considered: Collinsville, Glencoe
