FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) – A Fresno County Correctional Sergeant adopted a puppy that was found almost crossing the street near the jail grounds.

On Thursday morning, Fresno County Correctional Officer Yesenia Montoya was conducting a safety routine and security checks around the Fresno County Jail when she looked across M Street and saw a puppy running along the sidewalk.

Sheriff’s officials say the puppy was about to enter the roadway, but Montoya quickly made her way over the dog to prevent her from getting into the path of traffic. She took the dog into the jail for safekeeping.

Once a staff member heard the story, officials say one of them remembered that Correctional Sergeant Rolando Diaz was in search of a dog to adopt after his female Chihuahua of 11 years had recently passed away.

It was an easy decision for Sgt. Diaz to give this pup a new home.

“I’m willing to give her all the love that the other one was receiving,” Diaz said.

Montoya says that days like this are the things that bring her back to reality -after seeing everything they see when working at the jail.

“It gives me butterflies. Just to pick up this little bundle of fur. We see so much bad in the jail that when something like this happens it just brings us back to reality. We are all human and these things need a home, and they need to be loved,” Montoya said.

According to deputies, the dog is a female, and she is believed to be one month old. They say the puppy is a Chihuahua, or possibly mixed. She is being named Star.
