Tear gas used in peaceful resolution of 6-hour standoff in Fremont

With 90,000 people in our area for the Biggest Week in American Birding, it may seem like the regular news has taken a break, but it turns out law enforcement has still had work to do .

Fremont Police Department led a multi-agency operation during a barricaded standoff that lasted more than 6 hours Wednesday in the 500 block of South Wood Street.

Fremont has distinctive skyline; St. Joseph steeple receiving repairs

If you see a large crane in the downtown, it is because the steeple of Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 709 Croghan St., is receiving much-needed repair . Windstorms and age have led to missing tiles and failing ridge capping.

The top of its cross measures an impressive 239 feet from the ground. It was recently surveyed by an engineer, who determined its inner structure is sound.

If you drive into town, you might get a chance to see the crane that towers over the church, with workers above the roof. Check out the photos here .
