    Dakota FFA Plant Sale

    Day of Action and Remembrance: Murdered Indigenous Women & Two Spirits

    What: May 5 is a day of remembrance, recognition, and action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Two-Spirits across the U.S. and Canada. Thousands of Native women and two-spirits go missing or are found murdered every year. The 2016 film, "Wind River," about the hunt for the killer of a Native girl on a remote reservation will be shown at 10 a.m. at the library. Everyone who attends the film showing will enjoy a fried bread snack. Flute music from 12:45 -1:15 p.m. in Debate Square. At 1 p.m., the MMIW Ceremony begins. This includes a blessing, a pipe ceremony, drumming, singing, a healing jingle dress dance and the Red Dress Ceremony . This is a fundraiser for the organization. The event is open to the public. Feel free to bring lawn chairs or blankets. No chairs will be provided. Everyone will be seated in the round. In case of inclement weather, the entire event will be held in the library on the first floor.

    10th Annual Cruisin for a Cause

    What: The Freeport, IL Lions Club has joined forces with Union Dairy for its annual car show. All cars, trucks, and motorcycles are invited. Registration ends at 3 p.m.

    When: 1-5 p.m. Saturday, May 4

    Where: Union Dairy, 126 E. Douglas St., Freeport

    Lena Dance Company’s Fifth Annual Recital: Fun in the Sun

    What: Watch dancing and tumbling to summer hits performed by local students, ages 2 and older. Tickets are on sale at the studio or at the door.

    When: 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4 (doors open at 1 p.m.)

    Where: Freeport Masonic Temple, 305 W. Stephenson St., Freeport

    Family Fun Night

    What: Enjoy family-friendly programming, including pickleball, the family fun zone, the imagination station, the pool and more.

    When: 5:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4 or 4:30 -6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 5

    Where: Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Freeport

    Fourth Annual Market in the Park Craft Show

    What: Durand Charm hosts event in conjunction with the annual Spring Plant Sale. Rain location for both events is Durand School (across the street from the park).

    When: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, May 4

    Where: Nick Saelens Memorial Park, South Center Street, Durand

    Cost: Free admission

    24th Annual Open House

    What: Tour the observatory, meet the staff, use the telescopes and learn through interactive displays. There will be a presentation at 8 p.m.; observations start at 8:30 p.m.

    When: 4 p.m. Saturday, May 4

    Where: Doug Firebaugh Observatory, 2953 W. Stephenson St., Freeport

    Kentucky Derby Party

    What: Grab your hats and derby attire for some racing fun. Pre-party starting at 11 a.m. with Workhorse Belgian Quad and cocktails crafted with Blaum Bros. bourbon. Stay for the race at 5:45 p.m. There will be prizes for best hat and best dressed.

    When: 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4

    Where: Lena Brewing Company, 9416 W. Wagner Road, Lena

    Spring Chicken 5K

    What: The YMCA's annual 5K walk/run is open to all ages. All proceeds benefit the YMCA Annual Campaign, supporting the Y's mission to strengthen our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. This race is part of the Rockford Road Runners Circuit. Awards to Top Overall Female and Male and first-third in each age group. Packet pick-up is from 5-6:45 p.m. Friday, May 3, or from 7:30-8:45 a.m. on race day.

    When: 9 a.m. – noon Saturday, May 4

    Where: Family YMCA of Northwest Illinois, 2998 W. Pearl City Road, Freeport

    Cost: $35

    Baby Goat Yoga

    What: Enjoy 60 minutes of baby goat yoga class to reduce cortisol (the stress hormone) while simultaneously increasing serotonin and dopamine. In case of inclement weather, class will be held in one of the barns. Please bring water, your mat, bug spray and sunscreen.

    When: 10 – 11 a.m. Sunday, May 5

    The Many Lives of Kal Penn (Virtual Event and Watch Party)

    What: Actor, writer, producer and former Associate Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement under President Obama, Kal Penn, will speak with Bridget Petrites of the Evanston Public Library.

    When: 7-7:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 7

    Where: Freeport Public Library, 100 E. Douglas St., Freeport

    Cupcakes & Cocktails

    What: Enjoy cupcakes paired with a variety of cocktails for the YMCA's annual fundraiser. There will be auction items for you to participate in, too. Stay for dinner and 10% of the food proceeds goes back to The YMCA Annual Strong Kids Campaign. Buy tickets at the YMCA or Big O's.

    When: 6 p.m. Thursday, May 9

    Where: Big O’s on the Hollow, 1931 IL 75 E, Freeport

    Cost: $15 for 4 cupcakes and cocktails; $17 for 6; $120 for a table of 8 and all six combinations
