Ben Hurt’s Name Removed from County School
Agnor-Hurt Elementary is the last of 14 county public schools named after people to be evaluated in a six-year “school naming review” process that began in 2018. The school was named for Guy T. Agnor, a former County Executive, and Benjamin F. Hurt, principal of Albemarle High School from 1954-1984 and Crozet resident until his death at age 99 in 2018. The Albemarle County School Board voted unanimously on March 28 to drop Hurt and change the school’s name to Agnor Elementary.

ROANOKE, Va. – We put a bow on the Spring sports season with VHSL championships wrapping up in the Roanoke-Salem area and in Charlottesville as well. At Kerr Stadium on the campus of Roanoke College, we had the boys and girls Class 1 soccer finals. The Galax Maroon Tide yielded goals from Alberto Vera and Eddie Erazo on their way to a 2-1 championship win over West Point. It proved to be the seventh state championship in the last 10 seasons for Galax.
Committee on the College at Wise approves new masters program
The Board of Visitors Committee on the University of Virginia’s College at Wise approved a new Master of Technology Management & Data Analytics program and heard updates on Wise’s fall enrollment statistics and retention rates at its meeting Friday. The Committee also voted to reappoint four members of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise Board, which advises the Chancellor and oversees the development of the College, for a second term.
Athletic Director Steve Heon Retires After 20 Years
Western Albemarle High School Athletic Director Steve Heon will retire this summer after 20 years in the job overseeing a profusion of victories by the school’s sports teams at the highest levels. During Heon’s tenure since 2004, Western has won more than 70 state championships, including 18 in the swim and dive program, 15 in track and field, 13 in tennis, and 10 in cross country. The winning continued despite WAHS being reclassified up to Class 4 during two of the last five years, which means it competes against much larger schools.
Advancement Committee discusses fundraising successes and Clark Scholars program
The Board of Visitors’ Advancement Committee discussed fundraising progress for the fiscal year so far at their meeting Thursday. Through April 30, the University stood at $535 million for total commitments, reflecting a nearly 20 percent increase from the previous year. Philanthropic cash flow, which measures actual gifts received as opposed to pledges for future support, stood at $314 million as of April, an increase of 8 percent from the previous year.

Western Wins Wordplay Competition
The Western Albemarle High School (WAHS) team “Best Western” won Wordplay for the third time this April. This is the team’s seventh year competing in this annual fundraiser for Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle. Wordplay is “a team-based trivia competition for people who love words, vocabulary, pop culture, history, and literature, and showing off their smarts,” held at the Paramount Theater each spring and played this year by 28 three-person teams from local businesses, schools, and media organizations (literacyforall.org).
