A bill that received strong bipartisan support and passed the Michigan House recently would waive fees for initial teacher applications and renewals for certifications, licenses, approvals, endorsements, authorizations and permits. We’re No. 1: Michigan leads the country in these fruit and vegetable crops

LANSING — Michigan farmers grow a lot. A lot of cherries and asparagus and, maybe a surprise to some, a lot of cucumbers as well. In 2023, Michigan farmers also grew a lot of squash. In fact, they grew more squash, asparagus and cherries than any other state in the country, according to the state's 2023-24 annual bulletin . The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports detail a state's crop production and other agriculture metrics. The 2023-24 report is the most recent USDA bulletin available for Michigan. Michigan farmers were in the top 10 for 27 categories, including honey, eggs, maple syrup, sugarbeets, snap beans and bell peppers, pumpkins and potatoes. The USDA measure crop production for many categories using hundredweight (abbreviated to cwt), a long used measurement for livestock, milk and other commodities. Others are measured in pounds, gallons, head or, simply, by the egg.
