Iconic incinerator smokestack in Brooks along I-5 will soon come down

Reworld Marion’s iconic red-and-white smokestack, a familiar sight for drivers passing Brooks on Interstate 5, will soon come down, the garbage burner’s owner has told the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality. On Aug. 17, DEQ issued the company the stormwater permit that’s required to begin demolishing the shuttered municipal waste incinerator, which operated for four decades in north Marion County. Reworld will begin moving demolition equipment onto the site in mid-September, the company told the state. In addition to the smokestack, the burner’s cooling tower, boilers, pollution control equipment, switchyard, administration building and warehouse buildings will all come down. The company plans to clean up extensive contamination on the 16-acre site next summer, documents it submitted to DEQ show. Soil and groundwater there have elevated concentrations of lead, arsenic, dioxins/furans, semi-volatile organic compounds, PCBs, chloroform and dieldrin, according to company documents. Reworld has joined DEQ’s Voluntary Cleanup Program, which will allow it to avoid future liability for contamination after DEQ certifies cleanup is complete, making the property easier to sell. Reworld officials were unable to say exactly when demolition will begin. Reworld incinerator was a partnership with Marion County The incinerator was built as a partnership between Marion County and
