Hallandale Beach School Speed Cameras Start $100 Fines After 6,000 Warnings

Five speed cameras posted near three Hallandale Beach schools stopped giving out warnings and started issuing $100 fines this fall, after police logged roughly 6,000 speeding alerts in the program's first month alone, as reported by CBS Miami. The shift from warning to citation has split opinion among drivers and parents in the neighborhoods surrounding the cameras, even as police say it is still too early to know whether the devices are actually making streets safer.

Palm Beach County schools seek hiring ban against 2 former staffers

The Palm Beach County School Board voted to ask the state ban two more former employees after they were convicted of or pleaded guilty to committing crimes against children. It was at least the fourth time in the past two months the board took such an action. In September, the board voted to have a former teacher and a former band assistant put on the state's list of people who are barred from working at a public school after both men pleaded guilty to crimes against children in separate cases. On Oct. 14, board members voted to recommend bans for Christopher Withers, a former math teacher at Duncan Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, and for Ruben Tirado, a part-time assistant football coach at Seminole Ridge High in Loxahatchee. Sean Cooley, chief of communications for the Palm Beach County School District, said the actions of the two men "should not overshadow the daily work of a team made up of 12,000 educators and 10,000 staff members, whose dedication has helped make the district an “A” rated school district and the most trusted educational choice for families throughout our community." Withers, 33, was arrested in March 2025 and charged with 15

Cardinal Newman's Open Division bid takes hit vs. Carrollwood Day

WEST PALM BEACH — Cardinal Newman football likely needed to make a statement in its regular season finale to stay in the Open Division conversation. Instead, the Crusaders sputtered on offense and couldn't get off the field on defense in a 28-14 loss to unbeaten Carrollwood Day on Friday, Oct. 30. "The same way we got down 20-0 [against Chaminade-Madonna], we battled back," Cardinal Newman coach Jack Daniels said. "Tonight we got down 14-0 and had chances to get off on the first couple drives and we just didn't do it." The loss comes at a bad time. Even with Carol City (No. 6) banned from the postseason, numerous programs are now in prime position to potentially leapfrog the Crusaders in MaxPreps' algorithm. Newman entered the night ranked No. 9 with the state's top eight teams qualifying for the Open Division. The defending Class 1A state champions will learn their fate on Nov. 6 after the upcoming "dead week." Even if they don't qualify for the Open Division, the Crusaders (6-3) will still have a chance to play for a state championship in Class 2A. Muffed-punt ruling costs Newman a touchdown Down 14-7 and punting, Newman's special teams saw an
