Florida star and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow led the Southwest Florida Community Prayer Breakfast on Thursday.

The football player is known for his strong Christian faith. He played for the Florida Gators before heading to the National Football league for three years, including time with the Denver Broncos.

The sunrise event featured the singing of the National Anthem, readings from the Old and New testaments, the exchange of prayer cards along with prayers from area pastors and religious leaders.

The event coincides with the National Day of Prayer , which has the theme Lift up the world - Light up the world.

The event focused on passages from 2 Samuel 22:29-31: For you are my lamp, O Lord, and my God lightens my darkness. For by You I can run against a troop, and by my God I can leap over a wall. This God — his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; He is a shield for all those who take refuge in Him.

The day encourages Americans to pray for the country and the government, military, media, business, education, church and family.

After the event, Tebow signed autographs and greeted fans.
