Prop. 45 puts California's environmental protections at risk. Voters, say no | Opinion

Buried in your voter information guide are 17 pages of legalese describing how Proposition 45 would rewrite California’s most important environmental law. Most voters won’t read the details. Proponents claim all the measure does is speed up the environmental review process under the California Environmental Quality Act. In reality, Prop. 45 would dismantle the environmental review process for a long list of project types, many of which put clean air, clean water, coastlines, wildlife and public health at risk. Yes, Prop 45 creates aggressive timelines for cities, counties and the courts for projects like data centers, warehouses near homes, forest clear-cutting and sprawl housing. But it also removes the requirement for government agencies to consider less harmful locations for projects. It would make it far more difficult to effectively enforce laws like the California Endangered Species Act and the Coastal Act for projects covered by the measure. Prop. 45 also makes it almost impossible for the Legislature to amend the measure if problems with its implementation arise. This is arguably the worst time to dramatically weaken California’s strongest environmental and public health protection law. Santa Clara County employees win legal battle over COVID-19

(The Center Square) - Another group has won a long-fought battle over COVID-19 lockdown policies in California. After more than four years of litigation, Advocates for Faith & Freedom, together with Wolf Haldenstein Adler Freeman & Herz LLP, secured a settlement for Santa Clara County employees who challenged the county’s vaccine mandate and worker restrictions policies. The county is in the San Francisco Bay Area. Under Gov. Gavin Newsom, California experienced some of the strictest COVID-era restrictions in the country, including restrictions against people of faith. The policies resulted in multiple lawsuits that the Democratic governor lost, including at the U.S. Supreme Court, The Center Square reported. The state and county governments ultimately agreed to multiple multi-million-dollar settlements with churches and pastors who faced jail time for refusing to comply with COVID-era lockdown policies, The Center Square reported. In this case , Santa Clara County employees were able to receive COVID-19 vaccine mandate exemptions based on their sincerely held religious beliefs but were then prevented from working and stripped of their salaries, according to the litigation.
