    CIF-SS Softball Playoffs: Six High Desert teams are moving on to the quarterfinals

    Maddie Romo struck out 16 batters over seven innings Tuesday afternoon to lead the Oak Hills softball to a 7-1 victory over Jurupa Hills in the second round of the CIF-Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.

    Romo was dominant in the circle on the road as she allowed just one run on two hits.

    Daylin Hoenisch led off the game with a double and then came around to score on a ground out by Romo for a quick 1-0 lead. Romo grounded out again in the third inning, scoring Sam Spencer to double the lead. It would be all she needed the rest of the way as Jurupa Hills scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

    Hoenisch led the offense by going 3 for 5 with a home run and two runs.

    Dallyse York went 3 for 4 with a RBI; Amaya Sigala went 2 for 2 with two runs; Sam Spencer hit two doubles with a RBI and a run.

    Oak Hills will be back on the road Thursday for the quarterfinals against JW North, which beat Norwalk 7-6.

    The teams have three opponents in common this season. Oak Hills went 4-1 against those teams, while JW North went 2-2.

    Both teams have victories over Serrano and La Quinta.

    Both teams also have losses to Redlands East Valley. But Oak Hills has a 5-4 victory over Redlands East Valley, which was back on Feb. 24.

    Oak Hills is the No. 8 ranked team in Division 4, and is ranked 127th in the state, according to MaxPreps.com. JW North is ranked 273rd in the state.

    Here’s a look at how the rest of the local softball teams fared in the second round of the CIF-SS playoffs.

    Diamond Bar 7, Sultana 5

    At Diamond Bar, the season came to an end for the Sultans in the second round of the Division 4 playoffs.

    Savannah Vanderpool struggled with her command as she allowed 10 walks and 10 hits. She also struck out seven batters over seven innings in the circle. At the plate, she went 2 for 4.

    Jordan Mullinax went 1 for 4 with three RBIs and a run; Isabel Avalos went 3 for 5; and Maria Perez went 2 for 5.

    Diamond Bar will take on Orange Vista, which beat Crescenta Valley 5-4, in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

    Granite Hills 12, Lancaster 10

    At Lancaster, for the second straight season, the Cougars are heading to the quarterfinals of the Division 6 playoffs.

    Lancaster took a 6-0 lead after scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning.

    Granite Hills got on the board in the third inning after two run-scoring singles and doubles to make it a one-run game. Lancaster added another run in the bottom of the third inning to increase the lead to 7-5.

    Granite Hills quickly tied things with a two-run home run from Mylie Shepard in the fourth inning.

    The Cougars tacked on another four runs in the top of the fifth inning after a lead-off home run from Mariah Maestas, and then a three-run blast from Mia Vazquez for an 11-7 lead.

    Vazquez ended 4 for 5 with four RBIs and a run; Shepard went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and two runs; Maestas went 3 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs; Emily Marks went 2 for 4 with a RBI and two runs; and Hailee Moore went 2 for 4 with two runs.

    Granite Hills (19-6-1) will be home for the quarterfinals on Thursday against Ganesha, which beat Harvard-Westlake 13-6.

    Mayfield 5, University Prep 2

    At Pasadena, the Jaguars’ season came to an end in the second round of the Division 6 playoffs after being held to two runs.

    University Prep entered the game ranked No. 182 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com, and Mayfield was at 343.

    Mayfield scored two runs in the first and second innings, and held on as University Prep scored one run in the third and fifth innings.

    Mayfield will be back in action Thursday afternoon against Viewpoint, which beat Pioneer 6-1.

    Riverside Prep 8, Poly 7

    At Oro Grande, Liliana Cazares scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the Silver Knights to the quarterfinals of the Division 7 playoffs.

    Riverside Prep trailed 7-6 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Rachel Lillibridge hit a lead-off single and then scored on a triple from Cazares to tie the game. Jazlyne Torres hit a grounder to first base, but Cazares beat the throw home to end the game.

    Cazares finished 3 for 4 with a RBI and three runs; Torres went 2 for 4 with a RBI and a run; and Rachel Rivera went 2 for 3 with a RBI.

    Riverside Prep (14-16-1) will be home Thursday for the quarterfinals against Yucca Valley, which beat Faith Baptist 13-12.

    Academy of Careers & Exploration 13, Leuzinger 7

    At Lawndale, the Eagles trailed by four and then rallied for eight runs in the fourth inning and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division 7 playoffs.

    Addison Shockley helped lead the offense by going 3 for 4 with a RBI, two runs and a stolen base; Danaka Pelayes went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, three runs and a stolen base; Araceli Manzo went 2 for 3 with two RBIs; three runs and two stolen bases; Aniya Edwards went 2 for 3 with two RBIs; Kamie Costa went 2 for 5 with two RBIs and a run; and Emily Castrejon went 2 for 5 with a RBI and a run.

    ACE (14-11) is home for the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon against Muir, which beat Orangewood Academy 14-4.

    Hesperia Christian 17, Cornerstone Christian 8

    At Hesperia, the Patriots tallied six hits but drew 23 walks in the second round of the Division 8 playoffs.

    Macy Piorkowski picked up the victory in the circle. She struck out seven batters and allowed one earned run on four hits.

    Hailey Hoffman went 2 for 3 with five RBIs and three runs; Eden Skinner went 1 for 3 with three walks, a RBI and two runs; and Sophie Anderson went 2 for 2 with a RBI and four runs.

    Hesperia Christian (17-5) is on the road Thursday for the quarterfinals against Temecula Prep, which beat Orange 1-0.

    Excelsior 7, United Christian Academy 6

    At Victorville, Tristen Gonzalez singled with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Eagles to the quarterfinals of the Division 8 playoffs.

    Excelsior trailed 6-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning and Sam Minghelli smacked a three-run home run that scored Alany Esparza and Rylie Hunsaker.

    In the seventh inning, Esparza drew an intentional walk and then quickly advanced to second base on a passed ball, and then to third on a sacrifice bunt from Joaneliz Miranda. That set the stage for Gonzalez, who fouled off two pitches before popping a single to center field.

    Excelsior (15-13) is on the road Thursday against Jurupa Valley, which beat the Archer School for Girls 18-7.
