Hannibal Arts Council announces Young Master top winners
HANNIBAL, Mo. — Twenty students were presented Young Master Select awards during the Young Masters student art exhibit held annually at the Hannibal Arts Council. Young Masters features selected works by students from Hannibal’s fifth- and eighth-grade public and parochial schools and Hannibal High School Art Department. Awards were presented at two separate awards receptions.

NECC participates in National Crime Victim’s Rights Week
Brianna Simons, institutional activities coordinator for the Northeast Correctional Center, helped coordinate the activities for the center’s celebration of National Crime Victim’s Rights Week last Thursday. They held several events to help raise money for this cause. A silent auction took place a week before the event started.

Richard is a reliable and flexible runner. He enjoys running distance and he does well on a relay team. Richard is good at supporting his teammates and the junior high runners. There have been a few times when either the cross country or track team has had extremely low participation.

USTF celebrates 80th anniversary of WWII battle
MEXICO, Mo. — The United States Exercise Tiger Foundation celebrated the 80th anniversary of the 1944 Battle of Exercise Tiger on Sunday. More than 749 U.S. soldiers and sailors were killed in this battle, 201 of whom were from Missouri’s 3206th Quartermaster Service Company, according to the foundation. Exercise Tiger was a top-secret training exercise that happened during the last week of April 1944. It turned into real combat when German Navy “E” boats attacked a U.S. Navy Convoy.

Dombroski named fan favorite at Salvation Army’s ‘Unmasking the Singer’ fundraiser
QUINCY — The Salvation Army Quincy Area Command unmasked Ben Dombroski as the fan favorite at its “Unmasking the Singer” fundraiser on Friday, April 26. The head-to-head singing competition, where Quincy and Hannibal area celebrities/community members donned mascot costumes and sang for votes, raised money for the Salvation Army to continue to provide shelter to people experiencing homelessness in Quincy and Hannibal. The organization also recognized Craig Industries and Quincy Brewing Company as its Business Partners of the Year.
The Sounds of Philadelphia come to Montreal with Yannick Nezet-Seguin
The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau (PCVB) made a pit stop in Montreal towards the end of April to encourage Quebecers to consider spending some time in the City of Brotherly Love. Following a reception with journalists and travel experts at the Esplanade Tranquille, they brought the group to the Maison Symphonique to attend a special one-night only sold-out concert by Montreal’s Yannick Nezet-Seguin, who is now with the Philadelphia Philharmonic Orchestra. Matias Tarnopolsky, the president and CEO of the Orchestra, told me that Nezet-Seguin became their conductor in 2010 and it is expected he will remain in that post until 2030. Montreal still has a piece of him, as he heads our Orchestre Métropolitain. Gregg Keren, the president and CEO of the PCVB, stated how Sylvester Stallone’s boxing character “Rocky to us is like Elvis is to Las Vegas.” Also on hand was a representative from a region called the Countryside of Philadelphia, something I had not heard of before.
Mark Twain Chorale to hold spring concert May 6 at Fifth Street Baptist Church in Hannibal
HANNIBAL, Mo. — The Mark Twain Chorale will present its annual spring concert at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 6, in the auditorium of Fifth Street Baptist Church, 111 N. Fifth. The concert, which has a theme of “Treasures from the Homelands,” is under the direction of Allen Means and accompanied by Alyssa Pyne. There is no admission charge to attend the concert, but a free-will offering will be accepted to help defray chorale expenses.
