UO grad students in 'freefall' after promised teaching jobs axed
Unlike the thousands of other eager Ducks back on the Eugene campus, Peyton Meyer didn't return to University of Oregon for the start of the fall term. In preparation, she had registered for classes and renewed her lease for another year. But in August, Meyer received an email informing her that the graduate employee position she had been promised had been cancelled. Meyer cannot afford to continue their studies. "I can't underestimate or under emphasize how important this GE-ship is," Meyer said. "It's the insurance that I have for my partner and myself, not just me, my partner. It's tuition, and it's my income." Meyer chose UO largely because she was offered a graduate employee role when she applied, which came with full tuition remission and health insurance. She said that offer was "game changing." Meyer and their partner moved from Colorado to Eugene without ever having visited the city in 2025.
