Phillips and Chequamegon high schools each celebrated track and field accomplishments at the Rhinelander Invitational on May 9. Chequamegon senior Autumn Michalski was a triple winner of the 800, 1,600, and 3,200 run events, and Phillips senior Hayden Sokolowski won the 110 and 300 meter hurdles to highlight just two star athletes on the day. Pioneers win at South Shore
The Butternut/Mercer girls softball team traveled to Port Wing on Monday to take on the South Shore Cardinals in a Northern Lights Conference matchup. The Pioneers were solid in the field and with the bats as they emerged with a 14-5 win. The Pioneers got off to a fast start with a lead off home run from Jersey Polencheck. Marjory Holtz turned 100 years old recently with a few celebrations held and a few to come at the Waterford at Park Falls. Holtz was born in Port Edwards in 1924, on her grandparents farm, much of which still stands today. She is the first of her family, immediate or extended, to have lived to age 100. Her mother lived to age 94, and her only sibling, an elder brother who was a doctor in California, has since passed. ...

Brylski goes pro se in libel suit
PHILLIPS — The defendant in a libel suit filed by Price County Sheriff Brian Schmidt has released his legal counsel and will represent himself, according to records filed at Price County Circuit Court. Appointed Circuit Court Judge Knox-Bauer granted an order on May 2 to allow attorney Paul Augustyn, of O’Melia, Schiek & McEldowney, S.C., to withdraw as counsel of record for Brylski. Lakeland Union defends home field to complete sweep of Antigo
MINOCQUA, Wis. (WJFW)- Two of the top pitchers in the Great Northern Conference went at it in Minocqua when Lakeland Union hosted Antigo on Tuesday. It was Saylor Timmerman, coming off of a 15K perfect game, going up against Bethany Lewis, coming off of a 16K win the previous day. The first time these two teams faced off, it was Lakeland Union getting the 4-3 win in 10 innings.
Prentice Golf claims first ever Marawood conference title
WAUSAU, Wis. (WJFW) - The final Marawood Conference Golf Tournament has officially come to a close and we have a new champion the Prentice Buccaneers. This conference tournament series is bittersweet for the Marawood as it is not only the Buccaneers first conference championship in program history, but is the final championship before the conference dissolves. Prentice finished off the fourth and final leg of this series with a solid 341 total team score. However, the highlight of this team's performance was freshman Matti Heikkinen's impressive field leading score of 73.
Family opens Lazy Loon Lodge
Jiffy and Chris Spurrier are the new owners of Lazy Loon Lodge, located on State Highway just north of Park Falls. Jiffy Spurrier said the couple started looking at the property to purchase the former Park Falls Motel in May 2023, and acquired it the following October. After a soft opening on March 18 Lazy Loon is now open for breakfast, brunch and espresso-based coffees from 6 to 11 a.m., with plans to add lunch and dinner menus. ...

PARK FALLS — The city of Park Falls has officially declared Poppey Day for May 24.
