A Pack of Wolves Killed and Ate an Elk on a High School Football Field in Montana
A park ranger removed a cow elk carcass from a school’s football field last week after wolves moved in from neighboring Yellowstone National Park and devoured the ungulate. According to reporting in the Billing Gazette, the principal of the small school in Gardiner, Montana posted a photo of the elk’s remains on Facebook with information about the incident. The picture shows the wolf-killed cow it with its hide torn away and most of its innards and meat scavenged.
Drones and Infrared Cameras Help Monitor Atlantic Flyway Duck Broods
Editor’s Note: Joe Genzel is Duck Unlimited’s communications coordinator for the Great Lakes/Atlantic Region. Atlantic Flyway black duck and mallard populations have been declining for decades. In 2019, the mallard limit dropped from four to two birds per day in the flyway, leaving hunters frustrated and confused. Although the four-bird limit was restored last fall, populations haven’t fully rebounded, and East Coast hunters are still wondering what’s going on with mallard and black duck numbers.

New Rule Will Change the Way the Federal Government Manages 245 Million Acres of Public Land
Late last week, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) published the final version of its “Conservation and Landscape Health Rule.” After more than a year of deliberation with various stakeholders—including hunting and fishing-focused conservation groups like the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA)—the rule will add conservation to a list of priorities that the BLM must juggle when managing its vast holding across the American West. Other priorities already on the list include timber management, livestock grazing, energy development, and recreation.
How to Fish the Best Day of the Spawn No. 4: April 23
We’ve been teaming up with expert bass anglers in recent weeks to predict and break down some of the best days of the spawn, and based on what they’ve told us, it’s safe to say there will be no day better in 2024 than April 23rd. Big female bass will be shallow, hungry, and ornery—a great combination if you want them to hammer a bait dragged into their beds.

Why Earth Day Should Matter to Hunters and Anglers
From the Driftless Region to the Northwoods, the heartland state of Wisconsin has given America some of its greatest hunters, anglers, and conservationists. John Muir, who would influence Theodore Roosevelt to create what would become the system of National Forests, was raised in Portage. Sigurd F. Olson, the writer and adventurer who fought for the creation of the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area and helped to write the Wilderness Act of 1964, was raised in Ashland. The mighty force that was Aldo Leopold wrote A Sand County Almanac, arguably the most powerful statement of humankind’s relationship to the land ever written, in his cabin in Baraboo.

Don’t Miss the First Ever Field & Stream Music Fest!
What more could you want from October? Big-game seasons—for whitetail and mule deer, for elk and pronghorn—are at or near their peak. All over the country, gun dogs are flushing birds and retrieving ducks. You can tag a fall turkey for Thanksgiving supper and snipe a limit of squirrels for a pot of Brunswick stew. And the fishing isn’t too shabby either—with runs of steelhead and stripers, autumn hatches on trout streams, and slab crappies putting on the feedback ahead of winter. Hemingway put it best when he wrote, “Best of all, he loved the fall.”
Watch: People Harass, Pull Bear Cubs Out of Tree
A group of people near an apartment complex in Asheville, North Carolina unwisely approached and harassed two tiny black bear cubs—and an onlooker captured the whole thing on video. The footage shows a brazen group of people prying the bear cubs from a small tree with no regard for their own or the bears’ safety; then they take selfies with the young critters.
The Gobble Report: Here’s When Turkeys Will Talk, Strut, and Come to Your Calls
Everyone knows that turkeys gobble best on calm, clear mornings, right? And that while a classic fly-down hunt at daybreak is memorable, midmorning, after hens go to nest, is the more productive time to kill a tom. And, of course, the best time to hunt is the early season, before the weeds get too tall and the turkeys are finished gobbling for the year.
Feds to Deny Permit for Proposed Mining Road Through Alaska’s Famed Brooks Range
Back in November, Field & Stream reported on a growing movement to stop a proposed industrial road through the heart of one of Alaska’s most pristine hunting and fishing destinations. The so-called Ambler Road would have stretched for 211-miles, providing foreign mining outfits ready access to mineral deposits in the foothills of the southern Brooks Range, near Alaska’s Arctic Circle. It also would have posed grave threats to iconic wildlife species like sheefish and barren ground caribou, opponents argued at the time. Now, thanks in large part to the steady opposition of organized hunters and anglers, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced its intent to deny a permit for the road later this year.
Snook Fishing 101: A Beginner’s Guide
In many ways, snook are the ultimate gamefish. They are extremely aggressive, fight hard, and grow to impressive sizes. Snook eat topwater baits, subsurface lures, and flies, offering something for every type of angler. Not to mention, they can be chased year-round in the Sunshine State. While you can catch snook in a few other areas along the Gulf Coast, Florida is mecca—whether you want to catch a bunch of snook or specifically target trophy-caliber fish.
Young Hunter Tags Rare All-White Turkey in North Dakota
On Saturday, April 13, opening day of North Dakota’s wild turkey season, an eight-year-old hunter named Archer Eagleson killed the jake of a lifetime while hunting a cattle ranch with his dad. Eagleson shot the all-white turkey just before last light after it charged toward his decoys from 300 yards away. The young hunter is only eight years old but he’s been hunting since he was three and has seven turkeys to his name, his father, Jace Eagleson, tells Field & Stream.

Oregon River Sees Best Steelhead Run in 20 Years
Anglers in the Pacific Northwest have reason for optimism after biologists in Oregon recored the best return of sea-run rainbow trout to the Upper Willamette Basin in two decades. The news comes just seven years after fishery managers counted the lowest run ever on the Willamette, with roughly 820 fish returning to spawn in 2017. Reports from earlier this month say that some 7,700 steelhead climbed a fish ladder at the Willamette Falls near Oregon City this year, and that number has likely grown since then.

We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›. If you are considering getting serious about diver hunting, you’ll need a lot of decoys and long lines to rig them on. Of course, long lines aren’t the only way to hunt for bluebills, redheads, canvasbacks, and other popular diver species. But it is still one of the most effective and popular decoy spreads for big water hunting. And there’s no better time than the off-season to make a DIY long line for divers.
Study Suggests Possible Link Between CWD and Fatal Human Disease—But with Many Open Questions
No matter where you stand on the CWD debate—whether you think it’s the most important deer-related issue of our time or more than a little overblown—what’s long been a constant, and a comforting constant at that, is the fact that the disease has never been shown to “jump” from deer to humans. It’s also why this report, “Two Hunters from the Same Lodge Afflicted with Sporadic CJD: Is Chronic Wasting Disease to Blame?” from the American Academy of Neurology seems potentially alarming. But let’s slow down a bit.
