Knox County Schools has begun alerting employees across all divisions of its central office that they might lose their jobs this summer as leaders face budgetary pressures. Roughly 50 positions will be eliminated in July, about a quarter of which are supervisory or administrative roles, Superintendent Jon Rysewyk said. "Our 91 schools are the most important functional piece of how our kids are successful," Rysewyk told Knox News. "We continue to cut when we don't have the dollars to get there and the cost of things continue to go up. It's our job to make sure that we're preserving the schools as best we can." KCS officials did not say which departments' employees have been notified. Knox News has learned educational diagnosticians and members of the IT department and therapeutic professional partnership program were told positions in their departments will be cut. "Out of respect for our staff, we will not be able to confirm specifics until all employees have been notified," KCS spokesperson Carly Harrington told Knox News. "We can, however, confirm that reductions are being made across every division of the district office." Employees whose jobs will be eliminated will know if they are rehired elsewhere in the

Despite disappointing results in local races, members of the Blount County Democratic Party found plenty to celebrate Tuesday night as Democrats made gains across the country. The party held its 2026 midterm election watch party at The Bird and The Book in Maryville, where attendees followed local and national election coverage while enjoying appetizers and desserts. “Let’s turn Tennessee blue,” said Marsha, 82, one of the attendees. “We need a change. We need something different, someone different.” Although Tennessee remained in Republican hands, Marsha and other attendees watched as Democrats claimed victories in several traditionally Republican states throughout the evening. By Wednesday morning, Democrats had secured control of both chambers of Congress, according to national election projections, while also winning several closely watched governor’s races. Democratic victories in states including Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio and Texas gave those gathered in Maryville reason for optimism, even as the results closer to home proved less favorable. In Tennessee, Republican Marsha Blackburn defeated Democrat Jerri Green in the governor’s race, although the statewide contest was considerably closer than the Republican margins typically seen in recent elections. Blount County voters continued to favor Republican candidates, leaving little room for Democratic gains in local contests.
