Weekly Safety Report: Arrests, Crash, and Fire in Millsboro, Delaware
The Sussex Governor's Task Force in Millsboro, Delaware, arrested two men for weapon and drug offenses following a traffic stop. A crash occurred at the intersection of Routes 113 and 24, damaging a utility pole and traffic lights. A fire in the Sherwood Forest development was ruled accidental, causing significant damage to a house and a car.
Fenwick Committee Talks Residential Rental Policy
FENWICK ISLAND – Officials agreed not to pursue ordinance changes as the town explores a residential rental policy. Last week, the Fenwick Island Charter and Ordinance Committee voted unanimously to forward a recommendation that the town council not pursue ordinance changes related to residential rentals. Instead, the committee agreed new language could be added to the existing rental license application.
Long Neck Village House Fire Under Investigation
Firefighters from Indian River were called early Friday morning for a fire in the Long Neck Village development. Crews arriving at the scene just after 3am found fire and smoke showing from all the eaves of the home on Lighthouse Lane. Firefighters determined there was no one at home at the time of the fire, however a pet dog died inside the house. Additional fire companies were called to assist or provide backup.
Shop With A Cop – Fun for All in Berlin
Maryland State Police in Berlin and other local police departments held their Shop with a Cop event on Saturday. Thirty children from Worcester County were paired with a uniformed trooper or officer. They met at the Berlin Barrack and the children were sworn in as honorary ‘auxiliary’ officers. They then went by State Police bus to the Berlin Walmart and were each given $150 to shop for presents. After their shopping trip – it was back to the barracks for lunch. Each family also received a food basket. Multiple agencies including the Worcester County CRICKET Center made this event possible.

Watson was an experienced surveyor who had done extensive work in Pennsylvania. He and William Parsons were chosen by the Penn family, which owned Delaware at that time, to be part of the survey team, along with a contingent of surveyors appointed by Lord Baltimore, that was to mark the border between Delaware and Maryland.

Weekly Safety Report: Robbery and Accidental Fire Impact Worcester County, Maryland
Worcester County Sheriff's deputies and detectives from the Worcester Bureau of Investigation assisted Pocomoke City Police in investigating a strong-arm robbery at Advance Auto Parts in Pocomoke City. The suspects assaulted an employee and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Shortly after, Virginia authorities engaged in a chase with a vehicle matching the suspects' description on southbound Route 13. The pursuit ended in Exmore, VA, where the suspects were apprehended. In a separate incident, a house fire occurred in Berlin, MD, which was determined to be accidental and caused by faulty electrical wiring. No injuries were reported.

OCEAN CITY – A Baltimore man’s open container consumption in a parked car led to drug and assault charges last month. On Nov. 24, around 11 p.m., Ocean City police observed a 2007 Toyota Camry in the parking lot of the Roland E. Powell Convention Center occupied by four individuals. A police officer observed a male, Sentell Burks, 26, drinking from a bottle of New Amsterdam vodka from the backseat with the vehicle’s door ajar and the inside light on.
Ocean City Comic Con returns to convention center Dec. 9
Ocean City Comic Con returns to the convention center Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for its annual celebration of all-things-geek culture. The event will host special guests, panels, screenings and vendors, as well as cosplay and video game competitions. James Dufendach, coordinator for the event, said around 9,000 people attended last year and that he expects about the same number this year, although each edition seems to draw more visitors.
OC Air Show’s Move To Late August Unfortunate
It was a good news, bad news deal for the OC Air Show this week. First, the event date change from mid-June to late-August is a major negative. The event will not be as successful and well received late in the season as it has been held in June for every year except 2020. The 2024 air show will likely be held the same week as the annual Jeep event, raising some logistical concerns with the daily beach parades, although the “Jeeps and Jets” marketing opportunity exists.
