Abbott House seeks parents for new Sioux Falls foster homes

Mitchell ties high temperature of 69 degrees set in 1896
MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell did tie a record high temperature for February 26th. The high of 69 degrees had been set in 1896. Mitchell’s high temperature fell short of the forecasted high of 73, but it did climb enough to tie the record. Mitchell also set a record for warmest average temperature throughout the day and night at 51.5 degrees. Our temperature is expected to gradually fall today, tonight, and into the overnight, and a wind advisory is in effect until 6 PM.

More than $53,000 raised during 21st Annual Mitchell Community Scholarship Fund Radiothon
MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) Mitchell High School seniors and Mitchell Christian School seniors will receive scholarship funds in the amount of $53,100. That’s how much was raised during the 21st Annual Mitchell Community Scholarship Fund Radiothon. The funds go to any senior at Mitchell High or Mitchell Christian who continues his or her education after high school.

Barington and Smith to run for re-election to Mitchell City Council
Mitchell, S.D. (MITCHELL NOW) Two longtime Mitchell City Council members will run for re-election this June. Ward 3 Councilman Marty Barington and Ward 4 Councilman Jeff Smith have served since 2006. Their seats are up for grabs in June, as are the seats of Ward 1 Councilman Dan Sabers and Ward 2 Councilman Kevin McCardle. It is not known whether Sabers and McCardle plan to run for re-election. However, during a heated exchange with Mayor Bob Everson at last week’s Mitchell City Council meeting, McCardle hinted that he may run for the mayor’s seat, which is also up for election in June. Those seeking to run for Mitchell City Council or mayor can take out petitions on Friday from City Hall. The petitions must be returned with enough valid signatures by 5 PM on Monday, March 26th. The city election is scheduled for June 4th.

Sanborn County 4H celebrated the completion of a new addition to its current 4H building during an open house Saturday. Paula Larson-Linke is a member of the building committee. Mitchell’s Friend de Coup wins grand champion award at Crusader Classic
MITCHELL, S.D. (MITCHELLNOW) The Mitchell High School Friend de Coup show choir was the grand champion at the Crusader Classic held at Bishop Heelan High School in Sioux City over the weekend. Fifteen show choirs participated. Sioux City East placed second and Millard West of Nebraska finished third. In addition to the grand champion finish, Mitchell won best vocals, best choreography, best band, and best crew. Max Bruguier was named outstanding soloist. Friend de Coup has a weekend off before competing in the Wheaton Warrenville South Choral Classic in Wheaton, Illinois on March 9th.
