Final update (2:30 p.m.): The Department of Transportation is reporting both original crashes on Interstate 5 northbound and southbound have been cleared.

Even with both collisions cleared, traffic appears to still be significantly delayed in both directions of I-5, according to Google Maps.

A new one that’s partially blocking the HOV lane on I-5 North near SR-18 was reported around 2:15 p.m.

Update (2 p.m.): The wreck on northbound Interstate 5 that once had all lanes closed now is blocking the two left lanes, including the HOV lane, according to a tweet by the Department of Transportation on X .

The agency reported traffic is backed up about 5 miles.

Update (1:40 p.m.): Washington’s Department of Transportation reported on X at 1:30 p.m. that the southbound wreck south of SR-516 in Kent has been cleared. However, there does appear to still be major backups between SeaTac and Federal Way.

Original story: Traffic in both directions on Interstate 5 is crawling after multiple crashes.

I-5 northbound just north of South 320th Street in Federal Way now has two lanes open after all lanes were blocked around noon Thursday.

According to Trooper Rick Johnson on X, the freeway closure is due to a “semi/car non injury rollover collision.”

Johnson said to expect major delays.

Around 1:15 p.m., Google Maps was recommending drivers avoid I-5 until north of Federal Way, if possible.

Another collision, this one southbound near SR-516, was reported at 1 p.m. WSDOT posted a video on X showing the right two lanes closed after a vehicle flipped over.

There are significant delays southbound from Seattle to Tacoma, with traffic near SeaTac, Des Moines and Federal Way.

The National Weather Service radar shows between a 70-100 percent chance of rain through rush-hour traffic.
