East Crossroads Lands Kansas City's First Kitchenless Oyster Bar This Winter

Kansas City is getting its first standalone oyster bar, and it will do it without a single stove, fryer, or hood system in sight. Brandon Hayden, a chef and certified oyster ambassador, plans to open The Shuckers Union at 1739 Oak St. in the East Crossroads, a raw bar and cocktail spot built entirely around shellfish and drinks rather than a traditional kitchen menu.

Uncovering Missouri's Best-Kept Wing Secret (Hint: It's Not Where You Think)

The liquor license at The Peanut has been active longer than any other in Kansas City. That alone would make the South Plaza barroom worth a mention, but the thing locals actually argue about is the wings: jumbo, bone-in, Buffalo-style, served in a dim room that opened in 1933 as the Plaza Buffet and Bar-B-Que […]

KC deli, barbecue spot closes. Owner says ‘terrible' parking contributed

After a year in an iconic River Market space, a Kansas City deli and barbecue restaurant has decided to pack up. Car No. 551 — located in a 1940s streetcar dubbed “ Trolley Tom ” — served its last pulled pork sandwich at 426 Delaware St. on Sunday. There are a few things that contributed to the closure, owner William Jordan told The Star in an interview Tuesday. Business hasn’t been what he hoped. Foot traffic dipped during the World Cup and has only recently rebounded for him, he said. But a lack of accessible parking spaces was a notable hurdle, he said. “Parking is terrible,” Jordan told The Star. “The contract company that’s doing all the parking control for the city is overreaching.” “As soon as people park, they write tickets.” Sue Patterson, a spokeswoman with the City Market, sent a written statement in response to The Star’s questions about area parking. “We’re always sorry to see a neighborhood business close, and we wish Mr. Jordan well in his future endeavors,” Patterson wrote in part. “City Market offers free two-hour parking in City Market square (on Walnut Street between 3rd and 5th Streets) on weekdays year-round and on weekends

Brewery and coffee roastery to close a KC area location. ‘Unsustainable to continue'

A joint coffee roastery-brewery business is closing its Crossroads location, with its team stating that it is “unsustainable to continue operations” after seven years of serving coffee by morning and beer by evening. Rochester Brewing and Roasting Co. announced on Facebook on Monday night that the space at 2129 Washington St. in Kansas City would close on Jan. 3. “We are so grateful for the past seven years,” the post said. “It has simply become unsustainable to continue operations at that location.” In an email, general manager and head brewer David Bulcock told The Star that their original location, which opened in 2019, saw a slump in foot traffic and bookings for their event space located in the back of the brewery and roastery. Those factors, combined with the increasing costs that many small businesses face right now, led to his team’s decision to close the Crossroads location. Staff were informed Monday, Bulcock said, hoping it would give them enough time between now and January to find other jobs. Rochester Brewing and Roasting Co. to remain open in Parkville This eventual closure will leave Kansas Citians with a single location of Rochester Brewing and Roasting Co. in Parkville, which the
