Southwest Road bridge reopening
(Shenandoah) -- Good News for Shenandoah motorists heading into the Memorial Day weekend. City officials Friday announced construction of the Southwest Road Bridge project has been completed ahead of schedule. Officials says traffic may resume at 4 p.m. today (Friday). Crews with A.M. Cohron and Son began dismantling the existing bridge along the Johnson Run, north of the intersection with Summit Avenue back in March. Funding from an Iowa Department of Transportation grant of up to a million dollars covered the project.
Shenandoah planning traditional Memorial Day service for Monday
(Shenandoah) -- Like many KMAland communities this Memorial Day, Shenandoah will mark the occasion with a traditional service. Multiple organizations are joining Shenandoah's American Legion Post 88 for Monday's observance to honor the military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice. Ceremonies begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Rose Hill Cemetery in the Veteran's Memorial Circle around the Tomb of the Unknowns. Dennis Nance is with the American Legion Post 88. Nance tells KMA News that volunteers and organization members will begin erecting large flags throughout the Shenandoah cemetery Friday evening.

Red Oak avoids major damage after Tuesday tornado, severe storms
(Red Oak) -- Red Oak officials are feeling fortunate after a tornado that touched down Tuesday afternoon spared much of the city from significant damage. Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency Director Brian Hamman released an initial report late Tuesday evening after severe storms spawned multiple tornadoes in the county, one of which touched down just southwest of Red Oak. Red Oak Mayor Shawnna Silvius tells KMA News she had quickly received reports of the twister touching down near the city's wastewater and street department facilities after sirens sounded between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m. Silvius says the majority of the apparent tornado damage in Red Oak was concentrated around the city facilities southwest of town.
