Try this: one basilica near Buffalo holds roughly 2,000 to 2,500 carved and painted angels, placed so one appears in nearly every sight line. That’s a fair answer, but it gets better. When that copper dome was finished in the 1920s, it ranked second in size only to the...

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority saw a record-breaking surge of riders over Halloween and New York City Marathon weekend — but many fed-up straphangers complained of dangerously crowded platforms and lengthy delays. Some 3.14 million riders took the subway Sunday, marking an all-time ridership high for the first day of the week and shattering last year’s record by 11%, Governor Kathy Hochul and the MTA announced Monday. Similarly, the day before, on Halloween, straphangers smashed the previous post-pandemic Saturday record with 3.59 million riders, marking the most on a single Saturday since 2016. Four more years — of something something. Democratic incumbent Kathy Hochul has conspicuously avoided outlining a detailed agenda for what she wants to accomplish over the next four years if she’s reelected. Her campaign website lists her “accomplishments” or record during her first full four-year term, but it lists no policy agenda or vision for the next four. There are no specific policy proposals regarding taxes and spending, economic development, public safety, education or welfare programs. Incumbent Kathy Hochul is dodging questions on taxes as she runs for re-election without a detailed second-term policy agenda. Now, she’s even dodging questions on whether or not she supports tax hikes as she tries to walk a tightrope, trying to appeal to moderates while holding out the fiery liberal wing of the party. Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani remains popular, backed by a group of largely younger voters who lean left and are energized around an anti-capitalist message of taxing the rich. Hochul has allied with Mamdani, trying to harness the enthusiasm of his supporters despite signs they haven’t eased up on their tax crusade even after the governor handed Hizzoner a new pied-a-terre tax on luxury second homes in the five boroughs.
