High school football playoffs roundup: Emerald Ridge runs over Eastlake

Results, recaps, stats and more from Week 10 (the Round of 32 playoffs) of the high school football season around the South Sound will be posted on this page over the weekend. FRIDAY’S GAMES (NOV. 6) EMERALD RIDGE 56, EASTLAKE 28 Emerald Ridge has plenty of capable ball carriers. Their styles vary: shifty, bruising, quick, powerful and contact-seeking. But none are as electric with the ball in their hands as Tre Robinson. Whether it was a race to the edge or flashing legit breakaway speed by turning a small gap into a long touchdown run, Eastlake had no answer for Emerald Ridge’s talented junior back on Friday night at Sparks Stadium in the Round of 32 playoffs. Robinson finished two yards shy of the school’s rushing record in a 56-28 win, racking up 274 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. “It feels great,” Robinson said. “Just trust. Trust in my coaches, teammates, everybody around me, puts us in a great, great place.” Emerald Ridge piled up 515 yards on the ground. Ex-athletic director resigns from teaching position at Pierce County high school

A new director is heading athletics at Gig Harbor High School following the abrupt departure of his predecessor. Jordan Halstead, former athletic director at Issaquah High School, started in the role Sept. 16, a district employee report on the school district’s website shows. Halstead resigned his position at IHS as of Aug. 31, per a list of employees leaving the district that the Issaquah school board approved that month. Halstead’s arrival follows the Peninsula School District’s removal of Erick Counts, who held the position for less than a month before learning on Aug. 27 that he was losing the job. The previous athletic director, Blair Suek, was hired ahead of the 2022-23 school year and resigned in June 2026 ; her predecessor, Bob Werner, had held the role since 2011. Counts then resigned his position as a part-time social studies teacher at Gig Harbor High School on Oct. 23, the district employee report shows. The district confirmed his resignation in an email to The News Tribune Tuesday. “Mr. Counts has resigned from the Peninsula School District, and his resignation was approved at last week’s board meeting on October 27,” Chief of Schools Michael Farmer wrote. “The district cannot comment further

Six Kitsap teams open football playoffs Friday. Here's the schedule

Week 10 of the high school football season in West Sound features eight total contests, six being postseason games. It's that time of the year when only the best programs get to progress deeper into November. Five Olympic League teams will be vying for Class 2A state tournament berths when they take the field Friday and Saturday, while Klahowya is hoping to reach the 1A state tournament out of the Nisqually League. South Kitsap, Central Kitsap and Kingston will finish their seasons this week after missing out on the playoffs. For the other six local squads, it's win or go home. Elementary school evacuated in Pierce County after students find ‘unusual odor'

Staff and students evacuated an elementary school in Spanaway today because of an unusual odor. According to a post from Central Pierce Fire & Rescue, crews went to Naches Trail Elementary School in the 15000 block of Waller Road East at about 7:58 a.m. The school day had not started, but several students who had arrived early noticed the odor and then said they felt ill. Paramedics evaluated the students, then released them to their parents, the post said. Crews also monitored the air throughout the building and said people could re-enter the school safely. While investigating, crews found an illegal outdoor burn in the area, which might have caused the odor, the post said. Crews found the burn and extinguished it. “Bethel School District officials communicated with affected staff and families throughout the incident,” the post said. “Once the building was determined to be safe, students and staff were able to return to school.” CPFR is taking the opportunity to remind residents about the impacts of outdoor burning. “Burning garbage, plastics, treated wood, and other prohibited materials is illegal and releases harmful pollutants into the air. In some areas of our fire district, burning yard waste is prohibited year-round,”
