Chicken Mull Festival returns on Saturday, Oct. 24
As America celebrates 250 years this year, Bear Grass is gearing up for their upcoming 13th annual Chicken Mull Festival Oct. 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Bear Grass. According to chickenmullfestival.com, “Here in Martin County, the recipe for Chicken Mull is simple: parboiled chicken, broth and crackers with as much black and red pepper as you desire. Many also add a splash of hot sauce. Pair a pot of mull with a sleeve of crackers and dinner is ready.” The exact recipe might not date back to Colonial times, but Historical records show the community tradition of “mull suppers” and gatherings were active by the late 1800s, while the specific written spelling of “chicken mull” appeared in print by March 1923 in South Carolina,” according to seriouseats.com. In 2014, Martin County-style Chicken Mull had a revival of sorts, when the Bear Grass community decided to dedicate a festival surrounding one of its most delectable culinary dishes. They insist theirs is The Original — likely born of necessity during the Great Depression, as a way to make a pot of chicken go a long way. The festival has reached thousands of people over the past 13 years
