Johnson County café closes ‘with a heavy heart' after a year in business

After a year and a few months in business, a Johnson County international café has closed. Taiwanese-based chain 85°C Bakery Cafe , which has locations across the world, closed its Overland Park location on Halloween. The former bakery and coffee shop had signs on its door Monday morning that alerted fans to its exit. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of our bakery …” the notice read in part. “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all our customers for your loyalty, trust, and support over the years.” The lights were off and product had been moved out of the store. In June 2025, the location opened at 12061 Metcalf Ave., serving individually packaged pastries: jumbo guava cheese strudels, milk butter puff pastries, cocoa-dipped Danishes, pineapple cake and more. The opening day was received with long lines and excitement from fans who had been to 85°C’s locations in Hawaii, Texas and beyond. Around that same time, international chain Paris Baguette opened its first area location at 11137 W. 95th St. near Oak Park Mall. Fast-food chain has closed two Johnson County restaurants. More remain open

Arby’s has shut down two of its restaurants in Johnson County, leaving a suburb with just one location remaining. Two Arby’s restaurants in Olathe have closed: 13790 S. Black Bob Road and 18615 W. 151st St. Signs direct customers to the remaining Olathe spot: 18060 W. 119th St. Arby’s has yanked the addresses of both closed locations from its website. The Star contacted Arby’s parent company, Inspire Brands, for comment. The company did not respond Wednesday. Flynn Group, a popular franchisee with dozens of Kansas locations, also did not respond. There does not appear to be any other affected locations. Managers at several different Johnson County locations said they had not been alerted of a closure. About 14 Arby’s locations remain in the metro. Spots in Johnson County include: 15021 Metcalf Ave. in Overland Park, 9525 Santa Fe Drive in Overland Park and 11445 W. 63rd St. in Shawnee. No national closings have been reported this month, but late last year, Arby’s quietly closed dozens of locations after sales dropped by more than 6%, according to reporting from TheStreet. Arby’s has been serving roast-beef sandwiches, curly fries and shakes since its inception in 1964.

This popular chicken chain opens soon in a Kansas City suburb

A massively popular Southern chicken chain is opening its doors in Raytown this week , taking over the space of a shuttered Applebee’s and bringing around 120 jobs to the area, according to a press release. Chick-fil-A opens at 6:30 a.m. Thursday at 9330 E. 350 Highway. Raytown’s first-ever Chick-fil-A will host a “moove-in” party on day one, offering guests who show up in cow-spotted clothing or accessories a free entrée or kid’s meal. The Star initially reported on the new Chick-fil-A location in May, when a spokesperson told the publication that they were eyeing a fall opening date. What was built in a demolished Applebee’s place is the 20th Chick-fil-A location in the Kansas City area, complete with seating for 90 guests, a dual drive-thru with a dedicated lane for mobile orders and an indoor playground. The restaurant industry resume of Eric Jones is long and varied, as is the case for the many who staff Kansas City’s eateries and bars. His first hospitality job likely wasn’t on the books — working at the hotel that his dad managed when he was 14 years old — while his first paid job inside a restaurant was an Outback Steakhouse. Jones has worked at Chez Elle Crêperie, the now-closed Anton’s, the also gone Bier Station and several spots in between, picking up experience in the front of house and behind the bar. Where you’ll find him these days is at Dodson’s Bar & Commons, which he helped open with Eric Schmidt, and O’B’s, a Waldo restaurant and bar that opened in September, doing front-of-house operations. In that time, he’s also collected friends and mentors from the industry — like the late Waldo bar industry legend Jeff O’Brien, O’B’s namesake. “At the end of the day, what really matters most to me is that I love the team that we have here,” Jones said. Johnson County's newest bakery, coffee shop offers international flavors

Abeer Jari is on the balls of her feet this early Monday afternoon, scurrying between the kitchen and the front register. She works through a line of three customers, one of whom said they decided to stop by after seeing a post on Instagram. She plops a meat-filled farmoza pastry on a plate and ships off a date bar. There aren’t many baked goods left at this point. Her inventory doesn’t make it until the end of the day. “So far, everything has sold out, and I’m happy for it,” she explained. Her new shop, Levant Bakery & Cafe, serves Middle Eastern cuisine from the Levant region, as well as items from beyond. It opened quietly over a week ago at 6518 Martway St. in Mission, but it plans a more official launch this weekend. Its walls are covered in antique frames and dark green paint. A large window is framed by checkered curtains, and a wall of mirrors covers one side of the bakery. The style is — some might say — grandma-chic.
