Hiawatha man arrested for drugs, multiple warrants
A Hiawatha man was arrested for drugs and multiple Brown County warrants on Monday, May 13, according to a report by the Brown County Sheriff John Merchant. The report stated that Brown County Sheriff’s Department deputies were allowed to look for Derek Frakes, 38, of Hiawatha.
Hawks qualify four individuals and a relay for State track
Regional track meets are always a very big test, as every athlete brings their utmost effort in an attempt to qualify for the State meet. Thursday’s Kansas Class 3A Regional at St Marys was no different, and the Hiawatha Red Hawks were in prime mode to compete, as the team saw four individual competitors and one relay team qualify to compete in this weekend’s State meet at Wichita State University.
About 90 square miles being added to Jackson Heights district
The transfer of about 90 square miles of land from Prairie Hills USD 113 to Jackson Heights USD 335 is expected to receive the Kansas State Board of Education’s final approval this week, bringing to a close more than a year of negotiations resulting from the Prairie Hills school board’s decision in February 2023 to close Wetmore Attendance Center, an action that sent most students from that school to Jackson Heights.
